That would have been quite a way to start. I'm a total jazz dunce (that's probably an understatement) and even I think that's an awesome song.

A fifties tournament would have been fun.

Yea I dont know much about jazz, either. Take Five is probably like the Nickelback of jazz or something, but whatever, I love that song.

We should ask Kevin Davis. He could probably tell us.

I was glad to see stip pick Suspicious Minds. Elvis doesn't get much credit for his work in the sixties and seventies, which is too bad because he really grew into a tremendous vocalist during this time. His work at American Studios in 1969 (the sessions that produced Suspicious Minds, In the Ghetto, Kentucky Rain, and a plethora of wonderful, lesser-known works) is among my very favorite. Nearly every song recorded during these sessions is killer, so it's hard to go wrong with any of them. But I'll go with this one, because it does a nice job of expressing the doubts Elvis was having about his career at this point. There's a famous story where he walked onto Hollywood Boulevard around this time, expecting to be mobbed, and he was not recognized by anyone.
A brief, but really nice write up of these sessions can be found here.

"Elvis’ vocal performances were genuine and raw – yet distinctly more refined, mature and focused than his previous Memphis recordings some 13 years prior. Absent the pop polish characteristic of most of his releases throughout the 1960’s – and without any trace of the novelty of his movie numbers, Elvis possessed a new element of ardor, energy and edge that was among many things, abjectly sincere. With ease, he shifted gears with the musicians through songs in which he vocalized plaintive yearning, desperation, indignation, passion, grief, funky swagger, tenderness and a veritable grab bag of emotions. Reaching inside himself perhaps to draw upon his own life experiences, he emoted through the lyrics – taking the listener on a musical journey to feel those same feelings."
Amen.

Re: Best Decade Tournament Part I: 60s: HTTT 10
Bugs asked if he could swap out his last pick. He didn't make a selection cuz he wasn't sure if it would count and needed to hear from me. I'm allowing it. If anyone wants that guess who song it's eligible, awaiting final confirmation from Bugs that he wants to make the switch.

This is the very first song picked by an artist who I also picked a song from. And it only took like 100+ picks!numbers wrote:Four Tops- Cant Help Myself(Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)
This probably means we will both get crushed in round one.
