Secret Mixtape Review: Mix #16 (10-31) is up!

Track 5: not a fan of the shimmery low-fi garage aesthetic on this one, but there might be a nice song underneath it. It was winning me over a little bit by the end

Stip, you sound like a fucking grandmother. Calm down for a second.

That song really sucked. I am also pretty confident that within 20 seconds you know everything you need to know about it. Some songs are worth sticking around for because they can surprise you, or gradually reel you in. This was not one of those songs.

track 6: There's an infectious ear worm quality to this one, even though I don't like it very much.

track 7: quick little instrumental. Not bad.

Track 8: This sounds like a song Lament would like. It's pretty catchy, actually. This is the best thing to appear on this mix so far.

Track 9--nice follow up to track 8.

Track 9 is pretty great. I also really like the brief instrumental interludes threaded throughout.

Track 10: man, what does this mix maker have against decent vocalists (excluding the last two tracks)? I like the fuzzy grind in the music

track 11--another interlude. These are a nice touch that deserve a better group of songs

Track 12: more low fi indie garage rock (there's probably a more precise term for this stuff but I don't know what it is). this is forgettable in a non-offensive way

it's like a less talented early period Beck

track 13: this was nice Very pretty. The aesthetic of this album enhances a delicate and tentative song. One of the highlights of the mix

track 14: this was also pretty good. If George Michael was getting started today this is probably the kind of music he'd be making.

Track 15: a step down from the last few tracks. The keyboard drone is hypnotic, but it's here to showcase the singer, and I'm not particularly a fan (although I don't think he's bad--just not doing anything for me). A song I'd have enjoyed more in a different context. A minor song when I'm starved for something major

Track 16: another instrumental bumper on the way out.


Overall not really a fan of this one, which probably bodes well for everyone else. I'm curious how this one is received by others. There was some nice stuff on here though, especially in the back half of the mix. the 8/9 and 13/14 pairings I enjoyed.

I don't know about anyone else, but the back and forth between Stip & Jorge has me pretty excited for this mix.

Chud's mix was alright. It had some nice pieces of electropop in the first half, though I think the hip-hop tracks felt out of place. It kinda nose-dived with that Taylor Swift song, though. The end was pretty boring, and the REM song was even more out of place than the Beasties and Fugees. Good effort, though.

Pfft, the REM and the hip hop were integrated well.
