It's going to be back to their roots.

and a logical extension of Backspacer but sounding like No Code...
While a Western guitar motif lost on the swings drum bass fusion, get your own thoughts into the subconscious often forgotten. "Pendulum" is a sweeping soul from the ballast.

It will sound a bit like the Who meets the Ramones meets Sleater-Kinney.

Joking aside, Pj don't have a great track record when it comes to trying to sound like themselves/recapture 'former glories' (See certain songs on ST and Bscksapcer).

Better they just try to go where it takes them and make the best songs possible.
The current songwriting/track listing democracy model needs to go though.

Pick the best songs. Not 2.5 songs from each member.

i really like the hymnal feel to alford pleas. booms organ is on fire! seems like they left the ending open for some call and response when they play it live. the gavel sounds are a little cheesy but are an ever present reminder of how this band helped straighten out a crooked justice system. 4 stars

I think it’s about time for Stip’s Guided Tour through the Alford Pleas.

Moments on ST, the bigger ones like Severed Hand, and Marker in the sand(haven't seen this one mentioned in a long time, and it seemed to be a totem for a long time)
And really obvious one from BS like Unthought known and Especially Amongst the waves.
I can never decide if the band naturally fall back into writing these songs or its a contrivance. As much as I like Backspacer, those songs feel a lot more contrived in an forced effort to write a Pj anthem that sounds like Pj. The contrivance is present on ST too, just they seemed to have gotten better at it on Backspacer.

I'm beginning to understand why it takes 3.5 years for Pearl Jam to put out an album.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

Yeah, I really don't hear any attempt to sound like "classic Pearl Jam" in that song at all.

I have a few issues with that song, but I actually like the ideas they're playing with a lot (even if the finished product doesn't entirely hang together for me.) Those pounding verses and, particularly, the instrumental bridge are the kind of things that play to this version of the band's strengths - Matt really gets to cut loose in a way that he doesn't on songs like Come Back or Unthought Known.
