Re: RIP Tony Gwynn
From his 35th birthday until the end of his career, he hit .349. Injuries limited him to just 186 AB after he turned 40, but in that time he hit .355.

Wow. How many other players can lay claim to that, especially in the past couple of generations?Fuck You Jobu wrote:Gwynn did top .400 for a 179-game span between July 3, 1993 and May 9, 1995. He hit .403 in 697 at-bats.DeLima wrote:he was at .394

Yeah that is astounding. That's 280 hits in that span, which is a little bit longer than a season.Green Habit wrote:Wow. Never met Gwynn, but was told awhile back from a sports agent (not Gywnn's agent) in San Diego that Gywnn was the "real deal" in terms of being an all-around good guy, giving back to the community, etc. RIP.

We can call that the Tony Slam. Some times people can get too wrapped up on streaks having to span an exact calendar year.Fuck You Jobu wrote:Yeah that is astounding. You think they mean just as much when they're not over the course of one season? That 6 month break certainly diminishes it in my eyes.Green Habit wrote:We can call that the Tony Slam. Not necessarily. It's still pretty damn impressive.cutuphalfdead wrote:You think they mean just as much when they're not over the course of one season? It's still very impressive. I just find it more impressive when done over the course of a single campaign.Green Habit wrote:Not necessarily. Re: RIP Tony Gwynn
Imagine if Gwynn had been a part of a good lineup throughout his career. Most of the time, he was one of the only good hitters on the team. If he had been the #2 hitter in a stacked lineup or something like that? He might have hit 400 more than once.

perhaps a steadfast running regime had emaciated your bare, dripping torso to the point that a portly fellow such as gwynn felt the need to spring to actionturned2black wrote:I'm not a baseball fan, but I met him while staying at a hotel on the Torre Pines golf course in La Jolla. He was the host at his son's wedding reception. I was walking through a court yard with my daughter after we went to the pool. He stopped us and asked us to have some food. I kinda vaguely knew who he was. It was the end of the reception and he walked us inside to a table and pointed us to the buffet table. While we were eating, he came back and talked to us for at least 15 minutes, then handed us a reception goody bag filled with at least $200 in stuff. He hugged my daughter and shook my hand when we left. He did all of this with my daughter and I just in swimwear and flip-flops.

Re: RIP Tony Gwynn
Gwynn in his career vs Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz COMBINED hit .393 in his career and struck out 3 times. Guy is one of the best hitters ever.
