True, but most of the tribe was forced out of Florida by the US Government and made their way to Oklahoma via the Trail of Tears, so you can see why a lot of them would find the use of the name patronizing.

Oh, and the native american on the white horse with a flaming spear representing the state university of Florida.

And the crazy dancing native american in Champaign, Illinois.

I'm sure there are more.
Isn't FSU on good terms with the Seminole Tribe, though?

I have no idea on the same for the Illini, though.

Didn't the St. Bonaventure Bonnies used to be called the Brown Indians? There was a pretty fucked up name.

Whatever happens, I think Bammer will agree with me that any change should not involve pulling a UND and going without any mascot. That refers to the football program now run by Coach Pete in Seattle.

here's what I don't get about this whole thing: rebranding allows you to sell ALL NEW MERCHANDISE. "I am a huge Washington (New Name) fan and I have to wear the new logos/colors when I go to the games!" It is practically a money-maker and the reason teams come up with new jerseys.

I get the feeling that Notre Dame came real close to naming itself "The Fuckin' Drunken, Thick-skulled, Brawling, Short-dicked Irish."

If the people you named your team after don't like it, then fuck em, just change it to something else. The Irish dont give a shit, and neither would I. It doesn't seem like a thing to be very upset about, but if some group thinks it is, then why keep the name? Just to be an asshole about it? Change it. Everyone wins. There is no reason to fight this battle if you are Snyder.

I guess you'd have to consider if the vocal members of the group actually represent the overall feeling of that group though. If its a small section of the Irish that are offended by the name, why give them credence when they aren't representative of the actual group? I don't know the actual numbers on feelings of the Redskins name, but I bet it isn't favorable.

I think we should change the name 'Cowboys' to 'Pale Faces', but that's just because their fans have become extremely nauseous watching their team over the last, oh, 20 years.

I've heard most natives don't have a problem with it, but i cant be bothered to look it up. If its just a vocal minority that cares then maybe keep it, but the Notre Dame argument doesn't really hold water to me.

Redskin is derogatory. It's fucking insane that in the capital city we have a professional team with that name. Indians needs to go as well. I don't think it's as overtly racist in name, but if the people it's referring to don't like it, then it shouldn't be used.

I work at a school, and while our nickname is Packers, we do have a fight song that refers to the Kaposia tribe. The last line of the song is Fight, Kaposia, Fight! One of the elementary schools is called Kaposia as well. That seems more like honoring the native people than disparaging them, but it feels like we're headed for anything referring to a people as being unfit for school and team names. Some of it might be oversensitivity, but so be it. There are literally thousands of other arbitrary things to name teams, so let's just do that and be done with this ridiculous shit all at once.

An 1871 novel spoke of "redskinned devils." The Rocky Mountain News in 1890 described a war on the whites by "every greasy redskin." The Denver Daily News the same year reported a rebellion by "the most treacherous red skins."

Daniel Snyder, who owns the Washington NFL franchise, has said the team name will never be changed because "what it means is tradition, what it means is competitiveness, what it means is honor." He said, "It is not meant to be derogatory."

Papers submitted in the case against the football team documented humiliating movie references by Hollywood icons Eddie Cantor, Bob Hope, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and others. In "Northwest Passage," Spencer Tracy, as a colonial explorer who hates Indians, importunes a subordinate to "Get a redskin for me, won't you?"

The final message, Shoemaker suggested, is that "even if the Indians were the first to use it, the origin has no relationship to later use. What happened at the beginning doesn't justify it today."

Who has ever said "redskins" in a derogatory way? By that I mean over the last 50 fucking years? No one. When people say Redskins, they think of an NFL Football team, that's it. To me it's a bunch of white people who think they should be offended. No one ever says redskins in any fucking context other than talking about a football team. There is no racism there, there is not derogatory meaning, it's people talking football. That's it. Jesus, this is so damn overblown.

Anyway, as much as I think this is a fabricated bullshit argument, the name is probably gonna change once it affects Danny's pockets. With that in mind, fuck a mascot. Keep the colors and all that shit and just call the team the Washington Football Club. Mascots are stupid anyway.
