Sure, if you ignore the fact that the fight to get the name changed has been led by a Native American...

What about the Browns? You can't tell me it's supposed to represent a dog... AND their helmets are orange... WTF?! This is utter bullshit, and must be changed immediately.

Hey man, I have no beef with you, but this argument is just so stupid to me. It's a non-issue. Where were all these "offended" white people 5 years ago? Oh, right, nowhere to be found b/c they didn't give a shit until they thought they had to. Now, after 80+ years, white guilt is coming in and people think they need to be offended? Sorry, it's just bullshit to me.

This got bottom paged, but seriously, everyone jumping on the bandwagon to change the name should read this:

Me too. I offended myself.

I was in El Paso a few Christmas's ago (is Christmas offensive too? - I hate religion BTW), and I went to a bar to watch the Redskins vs. Eagles, and you know what? There were a few Native Americans originally from South Dakota there, and they were in Redskins gear. There sure as shit didn't seem offended to me. I wish I had a picture, but I don't, so I guess you can take me at my word, but I'm telling you, there were American Indians there in Redskins gear and they were cheering the team on.

There are obviously two sides to this argument, but it's not as simple as some saying it's offensive, and if you don't think it's offensive, you are a racist. There are a lot of Natives who don't give a fuck. Why isn't their voice being heard? Also, like I said earlier, when as anyone you known ever said "redskins" and NOT been talking football? Maybe you have heard it in a derogatory way, but in my 30ish+ years, I never have, and neither has anyone I've known. Why are there still high schools on Indian Reservations that use the name "redskins' as their mascot? I mean if it was so offensive wouldn't they have changed it?

At the end of the day, it's probably gonna change, just because it's the ultra PC world we live in. Everyone is offended by something. So just call the team "Washington" (which in many ways is more offensive considering all the political hacks that fuck our country up) and be done with it.

They can even use the Nationals "W" like this:

At this point, I'm just sick of the debate, and would rather stick to talking football and if RG3 can comeback and lead the team to the playoffs.

I was going to not even bring this up because it is only anecdotal, but anyone I felt okay bringing it up to that was part of the Seneca nation were far from offended by the team name.

As I hinted at earlier, that would annoy me because I think of the Huskies when I hear the name Washington standalone in football terms.

And on a similar note, regardless of where you stand I think it's not the correct move for some in the media to avoid using the name. The name of the team is the Washington Redskins, whether you like it or not. If you think the word is toxic then you owe it to your readers to make the fact clear of exactly what that word is so you can demonstrate your point.

What about all those die-hard fans who have the team's logo tattooed somewhere if this thing goes ahead - they're going to be regarded as dirty racists

I'm white. The term redskins doesn't offend me personally. However, if one native american is genuinely bothered by it, it should be changed. While I agree that too many people are just looking to be offended by shit, I think any base description of an entire people has no place in sports. Like I said earlier, pick from thousands of arbitrary words. The argument that it wasn't offensive years ago is silly. Evolution for us means learning from our earlier ignorance or stupidity.
