Misanthropic bliss. One of my favorite songs of the year. The whole album is just killer.

More killer shit from Philly this time an ode to Aussie soccer hooliganism, by John Sharkey III from Clockcleaner and Puerto Rican Flowers.
I love this, but the 7" is five bucks with five dollars shipping.

Three in a row! Why the fuck not? This shit rules.
PowerTakeOff- Man It Smells Great in Here
PowerTakeOff- Man It Smells Great in Here
Don't let the laconic warped Western album intro lull you into a false sense of serenity, be assured this record is coming for your head. And it's bringing with it a swinging hammer of sludgy noise rock capable of deafening an entire city block. Big, hulking, spiteful noise rock that backs you into a corner and reels off paranoid rant after paranoid rant. It accuses you of crimes you hadn't even thought to commit, nor did you wish to be privy to. It throws a thick, heavy blanket of diseased wool over your head to administer a methodical and ritualistic beating, humming the entire time. It does things that nice bands don't...or won't depending on your own personal politics.
So who's behind this parade of the horribles anyway? For starters, and mainly, you're dealing with Gus Engstrom of the defunct Grids (a killing spree of a band in their own right). He is augmented in his quest for audio upheaval by Creston Spiers of Harvey Milk on trumpet (of all things), John Neff of Drive By Truckers on pedal steel, Adam Marx of Seawhores on guitar, and Matt from Moonshine on drums. Together they mount one convincing assault on your ears, all pummel and thud, with that hint of nuanced psychosis...just the right amount of crazy.
If you have any Rusted Shut, Clockcleaner, Head Of David, King Snake Roost, Swans, Harvey Milk, or Flipper in your record collection, then I believe you've found a winner here.

Fanfare by Jonathan Wilson is my favourite album of the year so far.

Just got through listening to this one; Drumheller - Sometimes Machine. It's their fourth album. They're a quintet out of Toronto that play music rooted in jazz and improv, featuring Nick Fraser, Doug Tielli, Brodie West, Eric Chenaux and Rob Clutton. Their first three albums came out on Chenaux's Rat-Drifting Records imprint. This new one is really good. Audio samples are in the link above.

Re: Albums of 2014
This was a bit out of the blue. I got to thinking about this band, North, My Love, today and decided to google them on a whim, in part because I was considering adding them to the RateYourMusic database. Lo and behold, I discovered that they put a new album on their Bandcamp, long after I had considered them to be inactive. If you're interested, you can stream it, but it's also available to download free of charge.
North, My Love - North, My Love II
Slow, droning music made with accordions, bowed strings, woodwinds, percussion, and vocals.

Glad you're digging it, Spenno. Some of the North, My Love songs are recycled from their first album that came out in 2010, but the new versions are better recorded and arranged, in my opinion.

I saw them with The Polyphonic Spree and Deathray Davies a few NYE ago back in Big D... Love the Spree (of course), thoroughly enjoyed DD... didn't like CM at all, BUT i'll definitely give it another shot. Thanks!dsb1218 wrote:

Re: Albums of 2014
I forgot that this album was coming out until the other day when I was looking for info about The Unicorns reforming (still kinda
about that). First solo full-length from Alden Penner, one half of the duo who started The Unicorns, and also one half of the other duo who started the even more short-lived Clues. A couple of Clues songs that didn't make their record are revived on this one, which is kinda neat.

Maybe my favorite archival record this year.
