Someone made a good point. Things like strings usually go down after the recording is actually finished. They could be farther along with this then we thought.

Though it's obviously completely baseless speculation, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Matt told the band at some point that he can't keep splitting his time between two active touring and recording bands. If that happened, someone like Freese would make a great replacement and it'd be a win-win situation if it meant we'd see Soundgarden touring more and putting out more new records.

The video I posted a few posts above was of Jack Irons playing the song of that name when he was in Red Hot Chili Peppers - i.e., I wouldn't be so quick to discount Freese on the basis that you didn't like his drumming on that NIN song. His playing is entirely appropriate for the material.
