this movie is taking forever. I could've watched it with anticipation a month after the trailer with Hooked On a Feeling came out, but now I just kinda want to see it.

This is as much of a Disney film as Pulp Fiction was

I assume the possible theme park integration and merchandising opportunities associated with marvel (and the film grosses) puts them under a stricter degree of scrutinytheplatypus wrote:This is as much of a Disney film as Pulp Fiction was

this film would have to be a success for that to happen, but I doubt it will be a success relative to the budget and marketingstip wrote:I assume the possible theme park integration and merchandising opportunities associated with marvel (and the film grosses) puts them under a stricter degree of scrutinytheplatypus wrote:This is as much of a Disney film as Pulp Fiction was

Whoever brought Hooked on a Feeling in and said "I've got an idea" is solely responsible for the one bit of personality this film actually has.

I thin that's a gimmick from the comics but I could be wrong. I've never read them

in the comics they are the 2nd or 3rd incarnation of the team name (depending on how you look at it). i just started reading this group and the movie seems to have a grasp of the comic pretty firmly. starlord is from earth but his father rules a separate galactic empire and has forbid his son from going back to earth. (not sure the exact nature of the films plot) and how close it will follow but the characters from what i have seen seem spot on.

Having powered through the comics, it's is close enough to annoy at the changes they're making. The team changes but it also has some key members that stay the same; some of those key members are not in this film. There are other things like who the bad guy usually is but I'm not going into that one at it's spoilers for the film.

Why would you ever want a movie to mimic the source material it draws upon? I've never understood that. You're talking about transitioning a story into a completely different medium...one that has completely different abilities and limitations. Besides, a movie inspired by a book or a comic has the potential to reinvent and to reimagine the known. It has the ability to do something other than just give you things you already know.

Yes, and this is the main reason why the Watchmen movie failed so hardMcParadigm wrote:Why would you ever want a movie to mimic the source material it draws upon? I've never understood that. You think so? I think it has a lot more to do with the fact none of the general masses (myself included) had any idea who ANY of the heroes were.

No, that's not it. None of the masses knew who any of the heroes were when the comics came out, either, and it's one of the most massively acclaimed comic book series of all time.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy
But when I say "failed" I don't mean in a commercial sense, I mean artistically. It tried to do a super faithful adaptation of a comic that was revolutionary because of how subversive it was within its own medium. You lose a lot of that when you do a straight translation to the silver screen.

I thought the Watchman movie was ok but I was never over the moon for the source material either. Like the movie I thought it was ok.

I'm kinda with you. I liked the novel, but I also read it later in my life than so many others that I know. I "get" it, but I was underwhelmed. The movie was fine. I liked it more than I expected to. It just felt a little soulless.bada wrote:I thought the Watchman movie was ok but I was never over the moon for the source material either. Like the movie I thought it was ok.

I agree with this, except that I'd argue that the performances were generally very good. The actors had heart and soul, but they were contained within this entity that just couldn't care less.It just felt a little soulless.
