stip wrote: Out of curiosity, what famous bands/artists do you find overrated/ don't have something good to say about? That's not a loaded question
Hmm, it's an interesting question. I'd like to hear how others answer it. One issue is that there are artists/bands that I didn't like but later changed my mind, sometimes almost a 180. Two that come to mind are Elton John and Billy Joel. Hated both of them for years. Now I'm a pretty big fan of both and really love and admire their best work. I wasn't "wrong" to dislike them, but my tastes evolved. So today there are bands/artists that I don't like, but that may change at some point. I don't like what I've heard of Coldplay. I really dislike Chicago (and the use of horns in most rock bands). I'm not a big Bon Jovi fan, although they do have some fantastic songs and were probably a great/fun live band back in the day. I really despise the Black Eyed Peas, but that's not exactly controversial. And there's stuff like Mariah Carey that's not really my cup of tea -- but I can see why some folks would like her. (And "Someday" from her debut album is fantastic.) People freak out about Nas, especially Illmatic, but it's always left me cold for some reason. And there are groups like Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix who I think are great and have listened to a million times, but don't really care to listen to today. Led Zeppelin probably falls into that category for me, too. Floyd, Hendrix, and Zeppelin are amazing and I probably know almost every one of their songs by heart -- but I never listen to them anymore unless one of their songs (inevitably a greatest hit) gets played somewhere. So, sure, there are plenty of things that I don't like or have lost interest in, but my tastes are always changing. I generally find that if someone is really enthusiastic about a band and plays me one or two of their best songs, I can at least find something to like and may even be converted/interested enough to learn more.

What I usually find is that I dislike certain portions of a band/artist's career. For example, I think (in opposition to most) that the Beatles early work is amazing and they basically went downhill after Rubber Soul. Which isn't to say that I dislike late-era Beatles, just that I prefer the earlier stuff and listen to that when I'm jonesing for a Beatles fix. I find late-era Beatles overrated and their early work underrated. Live at the Star Club in Hamburg is one of the greatest live albums of ALL TIME, but you never, ever hear about that in the Beatles lore. It's like it doesn't exist. I think Elvis' early work is rated to0 highly compared to his later work, which receives only scant attention.

Anyway, my musical tastes are broad and ever expanding. Music is like pizza or sex -- even when it's bad, it's still pretty good. Most of my current listening is jazz and country. I'm out of town at for a wedding right now and burning CDs from a friend's collection. I have all the rock stuff -- or don't care to have it -- so I'm burning:

Gillian Welch
Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross
Keith Whitley
Ralph Stanley
Webb Pierce
Randy Travis
Don Edwards
Ornette Coleman
Dave Brubeck
Amanda Richards
Bob Wills
Eddy Arnold
Ottmar Liebert
Sandy Bull
Bonnie Raitt
Ian Tyson
Charles Mingus
The Modern Jazz Quartet
Cannonball Adderly
Art Pepper
Sonny Rollins
Les Paul and Mary Ford
and something called "The Best Blue Note Album in the World"

All of this ends up on an iPod, which plays on random day in and day out.

Oh, and:

I Got Bugs

Lament (although I hated voting against La Isla Bonita – I seriously love that song. IHTP’s entire lineup was stellar)

Me (Knee had some of my favorite picks in this tournament. Terence Trent D'arby's debut is one of my favorite albums of all time. If she hadn't chosen a Jane's Addiction song, I would have picked Ocean Size. They needed to be on here somewhere.)

Stip (Kaius list was terrific – these are some of my favorite artists, but not always the songs I like the most by them. Stip edged it with fantastic picks from Michael Jackson, Sheila E., Prince and Paul Simon. I was genuinely surprised to see anyone throwing down What Have I Done to Deserve This, a wonderful song that more people should know.)

Numbers over Bugs, on the strength of his Pixies/Talking Heads/Femmes/Clash run.
Thip over Lament in a close thing. Lament's first 4 were excellent, but thip may have my fave team.
Pryto and knee tunes is a dead heat for me. I want to give it to Pryto for having the Stone Roses on his team, but in the end vote to knee tunes for having that most magnificent of tunes, Under Pressure.
stip over Kaius on the back of Jackson, Prince and Run DMC.

Under pressure looks to be the most popular pick of any decade so far. Lucky for queen and Bowie that Harvey danger is a 90s band
