I don't mean it to be so serious either.

Re: Song of the moment: Come Back
I liked Come Back when it came out and I like it more now.
During the 5/27/06 show in Camden, Pearl Jam had a hard time doing what they wanted to all night. Ed seemed frustrated and it was clear to me that it was an off night. (The band asked for alcohol sales to be cut off before the end of the main set.)
Then in the first encore they played Come Back and everything came together. You could feel it in the audience. They acheived an effect on the crowd similar to a great performance of Black. After that experience I'll never question Come Back.

The first few times I listened to S/T, it was like
parachutes: beatles rip off
come back: rolling stones rip off
unemployable: springsteen rip off
anhybody else ?

I really love that song.knee tunes wrote:unemployable: springsteen rip off
But I don't think it sounds anything like Springsteen.
Good thing, since I think Springsteen is awful.

Spenno, it is very Springsteen. Army Reserve is too.Birds in Hell wrote:I really love that song.knee tunes wrote:unemployable: springsteen rip off

Perhaps lyrically, but musically? I really dig the guitar arrangement.WtOB? wrote:Spenno, it is very Springsteen. Army Reserve is too.Birds in Hell wrote:I really love that song.knee tunes wrote:unemployable: springsteen rip off

Good songs!

I still maintain that this song is terrible. Light Years tackles similar themes and does a much better job of it.

i did think beatles and springsteen, but they aren't rip offs. They're songs that wear their influence on their sleeve.

Yeah I am mainly referring to Eddie. He was going through a big Springsteen phase during Avocado I reckon.Birds in Hell wrote:Perhaps lyrically, but musically? I don't think it's terrible, I just think it's kinda weak.

Re: Song of the moment: Come Back
Come Back is more Otis Redding. Army Reserve sounds like U2. Musically at least.WtOB? wrote:Yeah I am mainly referring to Eddie. Re: Song of the moment: Come Back
Army Reserve's chorus has always reminded me of the late 80s hit The Living Years by Mike & the Mechanics. Neither it or Unemployable would rank particularly high on my listing of Pearl Jam songs.
Never really thought of the Beatles listening to Parachutes. I like it though in an adult contemporary radio kind of way.
And of course I'm not the first to mention it but Marker in the Sand has a Dave Matthews Band vibe.

This is the only thing I could think of reading your post.Brainof23 wrote:It is shocking to me that people exist who love Pearl Jam and hate this song. It seems strange to me. I have been outspoken about not quite getting the negativity around here especially how passionately it can be directed at S/T and Backspacer.
Anyway, I was subbing when this came out and I had a long term gig at an all girl's catholic high school. The best part about subbing there was how studious the girls were. I would put the work on the board and they would do it. I remember listening to S/T in a quiet room full of 16 year old girls working on some math problems. Come Back was playing and after it finished a girl raised her hand and asked, "What was that song? It was amazing."
I ended up talking about it with the whole class. We were discussing the lyrics, talking about people we lost, ect. It was a really cool thing that just happened.

Re: Song of the moment: Come Back
Is it really shocking? How many Pearl Jam songs sound like "Come Back"? This is a stylistic outlier, I think it makes total sense that some people dislike it.Brainof23 wrote:It is shocking to me that people exist who love Pearl Jam and hate this song. It seems strange to me.
