It was good enough for William Shatner to cover.

At a brief Google:

#1 on NME's 100 Best Songs of the 1990s

# 2 on Pitchfork's Top 200 Tracks of the 1990s

The song's (unranked) entry in Time Magazine's All-Time Top 100 Songs
I meant at the time.

I tended to shy away from britpop stuff at the time ( and still largely do ) so unless it's presence was pretty ubiquitous it would have been easy to miss.

I just glanced at that pitchfork top 10. Our lists would diverge slightly

Which really makes my david bowie mistake all the more mind blowing. I saw this video plenty of times in the mid 90s, and had to have been well aware that it was some other band that wasn't bowie. But some time after that, in the late 90s/early aughts I forgot who this was and in my mind just assumed it was some random bowie track. It wasn't til Shatner covered it in the mid aughts that I realized it wasn't.

And for years I kept this mistake to myself. I tweeted it once over the last year and Lament was all "wtf? I guess I can see it but wtf"

I'll give it another listen after the girls can go to bed when no one is fussy and grabbing at me.

I'm fully prepared for the onslaught, but(and?) I don't think Common People is all that great.

There are 2 or 3 better songs on that album... that's about as much as I can give you.

Seeing Pulp blow the roof off of Radio City Music Hall during Common People a few years ago was one of my favorite concert-going moments ever.
