anna begins and round here are good examples of how overwritten some counting crows songs are. I think they're much better when their songs are a bit more fluid.

Tone it down, guys! When Adam's not banging superhot young actresses and models, playing to thousands of adoring fans, chilling in his NYC penthouse, sitting courtside, or spending his millions, he's probably lurking the RM to see what we think of him! Shhhhh!theplatypus wrote:It's amazing how much that guy looks like goatee'd Robert Smith these days though

I'm not sure what you mean by overwritten or fluid here, Stip. Care to elaborate?stip wrote:anna begins and round here are good examples of how overwritten some counting crows songs are. I think they're much better when their songs are a bit more fluid.

I saw him do a solo show around 2000 an it was really good. Occasionally one dimensional but he is a great performer. Not any where near a Bad Seeds show thoughBirds in Hell wrote:Ah, fair enough.Varis wrote:Yeah, I tried to argue that one as an absolutely required trip but got vetoed on 2 fronts - Lisa is heading off to Darwin for a friends birthday at the same time as the Perth shows are on and our finances kicked me in the balls with a dose of reality as well (we are moving at the end of the year and are juggling 2 mortgages with unknown tenant movements at this stage).Birds in Hell wrote:Good one, V.
Did you end up getting tickets to the solo tour?
Really bummed actually. The Fremantle Arts Centre is a great venue too. I saw the Black Keys there a few years back.
Are you going?
Yes, we are, looking forward to it.
Still not sure what sort of show it's going to be but I'm sure it'll be enjoyable.

Re: Best Decade Tournament - 90s: Farmer John and ledbetter
I don't really want to talk about songs that haven't been drafted yet, so examples are limited. I think Adam Duritz can come up with some excellent turns of phrase and insightful observations, but he has a tendency to just shove too many words and thoughts into a song, a lyric, a line, to the point that the melody becomes a bit stilted and the song buckles under the weight. And while he's good, he is not quite at the rarefied level of the true masters where the words can really stand on their own independent of the melody. I think their best stuff has the writing working with, rather than against, the melody and so the songs sail along at a fast, breezy clip--which is a nice juxtaposition with how lyrically intensive they are.PryTo wrote:I'm not sure what you mean by overwritten or fluid here, Stip. If that makes sense. If you come back to this after the draft I'll give you some examples.

Makes sense. I think Springsteen's early work suffered from this same problem. Everyone wants to be Bob Dylan. Duritz has probably gotten better over the years at doing less of the heavy verbage thing. But yes, let's take this up at a later time, maybe in the more appropriate CCs thread.
Anyway, where is Kaius!?
I'm off to doing some (offline) reading. 'Night ya'll!

NOT NOW KIDS DADDY IS BUSY W/ HIS INTERNET FRIENDS
Neutral Milk Hotel - Oh Comely
Oh comely, I will be with you when you lose your breath,
Chasing the only meaningful memory you thought you had left.
With some pretty, bright and bubbly terrible scene
That was doing her thing on your chest.
But oh comely,
It isn't as pretty as you'd like to guess
In your memory, you're drunk on your awe to me
It doesn't mean anything at all.
Oh comely,
All of your friends are all letting you blow,
Bristling and ugly, bursting with fruits falling out from the holes
Of some pretty, bright, and bubbly friend
You could need to say comforting things in your ear
But oh comely,
There isn't such one friend that you could find here.
Standing next to me,
He's only my enemy
I'll crush him with everything I own.
Say what you want to say
Hang for your hollow ways
Moving your mouth to pull out
All your miracle aimed for me.
Your father made fetuses with flesh licking ladies,
While you and your mother were asleep in the trailer park.
Thunderous sparks from the dark of the stadiums,
The music and medicine you needed for comforting.
So make all your fat fleshy fingers to moving,
And pluck all your silly strings, bend all your notes for me.
Soft silly music is meaningful magical,
The movements were beautiful, all in your ovaries.
All of them milking with green fleshy flowers,
While powerful pistons were sugary sweet machines.
Smelling of semen all under the garden
Was all you were needing when you still believed in me.
Say what your want to say.
Hang for your hollow ways.
Moving your mouth to pull out
All your miracle aimed for me.
And I know they buried her body with others,
Her sister and mother and five-hundred families.
And will she remember me fifty years later?
I wished I could save her in some sort of time machine.
Know all your enemies.
We know who our enemies are.
Know all your enemies.
We know who our enemies are.
Goldaline, my dear,
We will fold and freeze together
Far away from here.
There is sun and spring and green forever.
But now we move to feel for ourselves inside some stranger's stomach.
Place your body here,
Let your skin begin to blend itself with mine.
