I think it should go by whenever the song first appeared, in any region, whether on album or single. If the single preceded the album, then the single release date. If the album came first, then the album release date. But either way, whenever it was made commercially available for purchase. So a song like Train in Vain, which was a single in February of 1980, would not be allowed since London Calling came out in December of 1979.

My intention was for the first 'official' appearance of the song. Live versions would be tricky, but a studio version that was pressed and at least partially distributed seems legit. I wasn't splitting hairs when I read the world commercial in your post, even though there is a definite meaning behind that word that would make you technically correct. Basically when the song first appeared was the intent, and Platy's pick seems in line with that.

Warner Bros. printed it up, sent it out for reviews, and then the night before it was supposed to be shipped for commercial release Prince demanded all existing copies destroyed, and it never came out. It was then commercially released in 1994.

I have a song from it on my list, but I'll take it off.

Makes sense. For the record though, if you had decided to pick a song from that Prince album, and if I had known before 10 minutes ago that it was a promo release in the 80s, I wouldn't have said anything. Because who the hell cares.
