Okay, so I know there are still "better" Waits songs on the board, but I'm going with this one for four reasons:

1. It fits really well with the rest of my team.
2. It's so fucking badass, I can barely stand it.
3. There isn't a bad Tom Waits song from the 90s
4. The Fight Club connection. That book and the film defined the late 90s for me. So I'm taking

A 700-pound Latino rapper who sells a million copies of his first record has GOT to be supremely skilled on the mic. And Big Pun was. It’s not surprising that he died of health-related issues at age 28, but his two solo records were enough to make the New York native a minor legend. (In the mainstream. For many Latino rap fans, he was the greatest of all time.) Pun pretty much had everything one could hope for in a rapper – great lyrics, a sense of humor, an original voice, and a unique delivery style. A song that really embodies this is “The Dream Shatterer,” where Pun takes a boilerplate rap concept (the “boast” track) and slays it. Listen to the phenomenally confident delivery, the clever wordplay and humor, the way he embeds rhymes inside of other rhymes, and throws Spanish words into the mix with panache (“manzana” means apple in Spanish. Rotten Manzana = New York)

Nopety nope nope nope! Never. Her whole stage presence, her persona, her terrible voice and forced, cartoon, feux-grunge, wanna-be, heartless delivery.

There's nothing about what Hole does to those songs that interests me. It's like they're a parody band. A really bad joke.

I mean, I guess, at least on that first big album (the one Kurt wrote) she didn't resort to studio trickery and gloss to mask all the missed notes. I appreciate that about the thing. Probably the only honest moment she's ever had.

Plus Doll Parts has some nice imagery. I suppose.

I kept going back and forth between TC and two others. Amazed all three were still available this late. But ultimately, since I didn't take the best available Tom Waits song, and instead went with a great song that fits my team really well, I had to take the BA PJ tune.

It also happens to sound really nice with these other songs. So win win win.

Most of my picks reflect what I was actually listening to in the 90's - for a couple of years it was Nirvana and nothing else, then I started raiding my brother's record collection for things like Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, RHCP and REM.

Waits, however, I didn't even know about until my musical tastes branched out in the 00's, but he's since become a top 5 artist for me. Sometimes it's a bit of a slog to get to the gems on his albums, but Bone Machine is a fantastic record pretty much from top to bottom.

Same with me.

Waits is the only one on my team (so far) that I discovered well after the fact. Just got into him in the past few years.

But Bone Machine is a beast. It's my all time favorite album. And Earth Died Screaming was my first favorite Tom Waits song. It's still top five for sure. And, as I said, it's #2 on Bone Machine for me.
