Oh we're so very precious, you and I
And everything that you do makes me want to die
Oh I just told the biggest lie
Elliott Smith - The Biggest Lie
And everything that you do makes me want to die
Oh I just told the biggest lie

Sorry guys, I'm still at work and I'm by myself. I had a line out the door.

Gotta go big with the final pick. My list would not be complete without something from the Coup, an Oakland group that should have been one of the biggest bands of the 1990s. The Coup’s inability to connect with mainstream audiences undoubtedly has something to do with group leader Boots Riley’s uncompromising politics. The Coup makes Public Enemy look like the Backstreet Boys. Hardcore revolutionary socialists, the Coup have songs with titles like “Five Million Ways to Kill a CEO.” While Snoop Dogg was sipping on gin and juice, The Coup were releasing albums with titles like “Genocide and Juice.”

They are a tremendous group, one that deserves a deep dive from any music fan. I’m going to go with “Dig It,” the opening track from their 1993 debut, “Kill My Landlord.” Dig It name checks everything from the Communist Manifesto to Che Guevara to Geronimo Gi Jaga Pratt. I highly recommend checking out the annotated lyrics at Rap Genius. Even the most knowledgeable scholars will learn something. It’s that deep, folks.

Throughout the song, the rhymes manage to be provocative, knowledgeable, and sound great all at the same time.
Gunned us, stunned us, exploited and they hung us
I’d like to take a moment to say, fuck Columbus!
Millions off my back -- the black-on-black crisis is a myth
The crack that did the damage was the one from the whip
Political music can get heavy handed pretty quickly and pedantic (I’m looking at you, Immortal Technique), but the Coup never forget to keep heads bobbing.
Can’t find an uncensored version on YouTube because almost NO ONE knows who these guys are, but it’s the first song on the full album, so just hit play and you'll hear it. (Song ends just after the four-minute mark.)

Re: Best Decade Tournament - Bundy/BRL/BiH/DcT
But now I'm done. And I'm relieved. There are three artists that I REALLY thought would be represented on my team by the end of this. Just ran out of room, I guess. But basically, the artists that recorded my top 10 favorite albums of the 90s are represented, even if the album isn't necessarily.
Again, this was a blast. Good luck to everyone.
I look forward to seeing all the remaining picks.
