Time for a nostalgia pick.

The Springbok Nude Girls were the most important South African rock band of the 90's, and a huge part of my decade. Every time I saw them live, I was zapped full of life and the desire to do something spectacular.

They came into their own with their second album, the "throw everything at the board" mish-mash of "Afterlifesatisfaction". Too many songs, too many influences, no unifying vision - it shouldn't have worked, but the result was the most well-regarded SA rock album of the decade.

They followed it up with "Surpass the Powers", a slicker and more cohesive affair that saw them edging towards the heavier, produced sound that would ultimately prove to be their creative undoing. For years, I thought this was the inferior album, but recently I've found myself listening to it more and more - it straddles just the right line between their eclectic earlier work and the same-y hard-rock schlock they'd wheel out on subsequent albums.

"Blue Eyes" was everywhere when it was released. It played 2 or 3 times a night at every school dance, despite its dark subject matter (in live performances, the lyrics constantly shift between "train you to steal" and "chain you to steel"). It dominated radio. I lost my virginity to it one sultry South African summer years ago, and every time I listen to it I'm taken back to the very best parts of my high school days, and the formation of my musical and personal identity.
