If Cespedes is in fact a FA at the end of 2015 (I saw conflicting reports too) the A's would have no shot at resigning him.
take it to the mlb thread... other than the slight mention of their newest lfer, this has nothing to do with the bo-sox.

Well Cespedes is a Red Sock and he will probably resign there. So there is that.....

If they sign Lester after trading him for outfield power....well, it's a dream, but it would be billed as quite the coup for Cherington.

not to mention he can't be stephen drew'd as he is ineligible for a qualifying offer.

therefore the sox need to sign him longer term.

which likely won't happen so, short of another trade (where they will get nothing near the value of Jon Lester), the sox get cespedes for a year.
Which is why I don't like the trade. If the whole reason you're trading Lester is because you're being cheap, why would you acquire someone on the verge of free agency?

There is NO way they resign Lester. That's just something they've had their employees at the globe peddle to try and appease a disgusted fanbase.

If that happens, I'd call Cherington a GENIUS!

you do it to be (1) in this same position again next year or (2) contending to win WS #4 (of course).

Kelly and Craig seems like a really solid return. I don't really get what they're doing, though.

But really, what's the difference between Kelly Johnson and nothing?

I don't either, it actually makes sense if they plan on resigning Lester, but I would be shocked if they did that.

James Shields will top our rotation next year and it'll be infuriating.

I don't see Lester coming back, but if he does, Cherington is truly a genius for this move.

The Lackey trade would've made more sense if they had turned around and traded Victorino (as rumors swirled this afternoon), but for now, it seems like it's a cluster in the outfield. Maybe they can find someone to take Victorino in the offseason.

Happy that Drew is gone, he never should've been here to begin with.

Craig can play 1B and Napoli has a contract that can clear waivers...
