Re: Movie: Mad Max - Fury Road
So, what's all this? Like a reboot? Or another sequel? What?
I've never seen any of the others. Can I go into this cold? Because I'd like to see this but have no desire to sit through Mel Gibson.

oh man you are missing out. Road Warrior is one of the best action movies ever made.durdencommatyler wrote:So, what's all this? Like a reboot? Or another sequel? What?

I dont think its a sequel, unless they are pretending Thunderdome didn't happen. In any case I can't imagine needing to know anything going in. If you know post-apocalyptic you know Mad Max.

Its a shame Mel Gibson went insane I would be super excited if he was in this. His presence really helped make those original films stand out from the typical post apocalyptic fare. I don't find Hardy all that interesting. Everything else looks pretty neat though.

Watch this on the biggest monitor you have and crank up the volume.
Easily the most excited I've been for a movie, based on the trailer, in over a decade. Everything I've read about early screenings is that it is knocking people's socks off as well.

Re: Movie: Mad Max - Fury Road
Yeah, The Road Warrior is a true classic and genuinely deserves to be in conversations about Top 40ish movies of all time. There is a great debt around things like the editing and sound design that almost every action movie that came after owes the film. What's interesting is that you forget just how rapid fire the editing in the final chase scene was for the time. Watching it now, the thing that stands out is how coherent the whole scene remains - the geography of the action is never lost. The editing seems positively langorous by modern standards (and I mean that in agood way). Miller seemed to find the perfect balance between keeping the pacing brisk and tense, whilst remaining comprehensible. Almost never matched.Dev wrote:pretty sure my friend was telling me how much he loved the old mad max movies just last night.
The first is interesting and what Miller achieved given a budget of almost $0 is incredible, but for my tastes the constraints on the movie are still a bit too visible. He doesnt quite achieve the mythic storytelling that he would in the sequel.
Third is heavily flawed but also interesting. It really is like two Mad Max films mashed into one and the loss of the streamlining that exists in I and II, but not in III affects the the quality of the overall film.

Re: Movie: Mad Max - Fury Road
From a plot perspective you can absolutely go in cold. Whether this is a reboot, remake, prequel or sequel isnt really the point of Mad Max films. Miller approaches them as modern version of Greek myths and plays very fast and loose with continuity and how the world across the original three movies ties together.durdencommatyler wrote:So, what's all this? One comment that I saw, that I liked, was that the Mel Gibson movies are the Greek myths and now with Tom Hardy retellings we've entered the Roman versions of those myths.
Gibson or not, you're doing yourself a disservice if you dont at least watch the second one though.

Man I am rrrreeeaallllyyy excited for this. Saw the latest trailer with The Battle of the Five Armies and I think I can say without exaggeration that it's one of the absolute best trailers I've ever seen. Even in the annoyingly talky audience I was with at the theater, once that trailer hit, a silence fell. People shut the fuck up.
Pleeeeeaaasssseeeee let this movie be as awesome as it looks...
