The YouTube journey this suggestion took me on has made me realise that what I mean by "dark country" is actually Americana. Found some promising stuff, thanks.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Check out Those Poor Bastards.

This is exactly the kind of stuff I love. Slightly campy tails o' the west.Strat wrote: I love this record. Gunslinger ballads. Some of the songs crack me up. Im not sure this is what you are looking for but i feel like putting it here.
That was great. Coming from a similar sort of place as Tom Waits' rootsy stuff.Strat wrote: Steve Earle

Glad I hit your sweet spot! I really enjoy the Felice Brothers. Their self titled record and celebration, FL are both pretty incredible.ABNorman wrote:This is exactly the kind of stuff I love. I think I've got the self-titled. It may just have got lost in the shuffle - every now and then I get some free time and grab a bunch of albums and see what sticks, so I don't give everything much time to grab me.Strat wrote: Glad I hit your sweet spot! I think you'd put the Avett Brothers here?
