On my second listen. Sad Lover remains my favorite, the only one of these I really loved right off the bat. Definitely pushing further down the track Blues Funeral started on.

Jonas Pap is definitely the odd man out here

I personally love that one. It has a very endearing quality to it (orchestration and his vocal delivery). And yes, quite different from what we're used to from him in mood/tone.stip wrote:Jonas Pap is definitely the odd man out here

Re: Mark Lanegan
especially on this album. I think Jonas Pap was my second favorite. On my third listen now.
I like the start of Dry Ice. It's intriguing, and I love how dusty he sounds. There's a pretty cool droning quality to this one, though I do wish there was at least one moment that really stood out that the song either built towards or that could serve as a juxtaposition to the mood. But it is a cool mood piece, and it might end up being a nice song to just drift off to.

Re: Mark Lanegan
No bells On sunday reminds me of a safer/softer version of Phantasmagoria Blues. It's pretty, but PB was better (though it was still in the bottom third of Blues Funeral for me), and this suffers for the comparison a little bit.
Nice chorus.
There is definitely a melancholy lethargy to this song that pulls you in as the song progresses. This is one that I think will definitely be improved as I learn the lyrics (not that it's suffering).

Dry Iced is the only song I've found that I haven't listened to as much--something about it just doesn't really do it for me. The title track is gorgeous though. In regard to Sad Lover, no other song of his to date has made me want a Trees reunion so badly (that's a compliment). Smokestack is quite epic as well, but I find I have to be in the mood to listen to it--the atmosphere is pretty cool--love the part when the music escalates about 2:30mins in at the "Nothing but static, Phantom Radio" lyric.

I'm not sure smokestack needs to be as long as it does. I've been losing interesting towards the end on the first two passes.

Sad Lover is up there with Mescalito, you wont' let me down again, and gravedigger's song as my favorite Lanegan track of the last 5 years or so (the post Broken era). I love just about everything about this song.

Re: Mark Lanegan
smokestack magic is definitely the weakspot for me.
Dry Iced and No Bells On Sunday are good droning ambiance tracks, Pap is interesting, and Sad Lover is amazing.
Pretty good Ep. this will tide me over until the record.

Re: Mark Lanegan
I think my favorite is the title track. Lanegan called these the goofy songs from the latest batch. The album may be more like Judgement Time/I am the Wolf, which is moving back towards Field Songs territory.
I love this guy for putting out EPs though

Totally agree re the comparison to PB. PB is certainly better, but NBOS is a strong track for something he categorized as "goofy."stip wrote:No bells On sunday reminds me of a safer/softer version of Phantasmagoria Blues. Smokestack had to grow on me, but really digging it now especially in the car, where Dry Iced just kind of drags. Sad Lover is just brimming with energy/brightness, I can't get enough of it. He's about to hit 50 and he's singing/sounding like he's back in his 20s.

Re: Mark Lanegan
Cool thanks. Actually I think this would be the fourth new song believed to be on the new album: Judgement Time, I Am The Wolf, The Wild People, and Harvest Home (which sounds pretty bad ass)....
