In Dave Grohl's documentary film Sound City, he collected interviews and collaborative performances to tell the story of an iconic recording studio and its surrounding music scene. Now, the idea behind the film is being extended for a full documentary TV series on HBO, directed by Grohl.

Foo Fighters' eighth album, due out this fall, was recorded in eight studios in eight different cities: Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington, DC, and New York. The HBO series chronicles the making of the album through interviews and collaborations with local artists in each city. One song from the album was recorded at each location, and "local legends" appear on every song, according to a press release. The as-yet-untitled show, described as "a love letter to the history of American music," seeks to tell the story of each local scene.

According to Classic Rock Magazine, studios featured include Electrical Audio in Chicago, Inner Ear in Washington, DC, and Rancho De La Luna in California. He's reportedly interviewed Ian MacKaye, Heart's Nancy Wilson, the Eagles' Joe Walsh, and Kiss' Paul Stanley.

I don't know, that's what Bob Dylan did with ''Under the Red Sky'' and that's generally regarded as one of his best albums.

Im somewhat puzzled by the popularity of the Foo Fighters. Over the past decade they have become huge, and I just don't understand how. Everytime when they have a new record out I listen to it a couple of times but everytime I feel dissapointed. Dissapointed by the record and therefore by the fact that I still not understand why this band is so popular. Yes, they RAWK \m/ and Dave seems to be the hardest working man in rock N roll and the nicest. But to me, their songs and records are just not so good. Dave is not a good singer, I don't like most of the lyrics and think their music is extremely derivative, basically it's 50% 'Husker Du' and 50% 'The Posies'. I don't really consider them a band anyhow, to me it's the Dave Grohl show. The other bandmembers are roommeat to me... and I don't think their playing is very inspirational. My god...that bassplayer makes me yawn.... The only other one who gets some attention is Taylor Hawkins, but he's not even the best drummer in the band, Dave Grohl is. To me the Foos are a good band not a great one. Pearl Jam is a great band to me.
So how is it possible that they have became almost as popular as PJ. I think that Bono once said that Pearl Jam could have been the biggest band in the world but choose not too. The Foo's did the exact opposite, they worked really hard to become the biggest rock band on the planet, well how do get bigger?? Play what the fans expect you to play, a new Foo Fighters record or a live show will gives the fan exactly what they want. Being a PJ fan means you are not always be given what you want. PJ never made another TEN record, from Vitalogy-Riot Act they basically did the exact opposite. So in November the new Foo's record will come out with a new record but I have a feeling, like all of their fans, that it will mostly RAWK \m/ , but not as diverse as PJ's rockers or as 'hard' as let's say QOTSA or Soungarden. Just you average rocksong where you scream and pump your fist in the air. There was a time when bands like 'Bad Company' outsold bands like the 'The Who', so good bands can actually become more popular than great bands, but fourty years later everyone will admit who was the better or greater band.

There is more to it than that.
1) Dave was in Nirvana. He put that first Foos record out quickly enough after Cobain's death that the large fanbase picked it up out of respect or curiosity. It was a huge bonus that the album was surprisingly good.
2) Videos still mattered, and Big Me, which is nowhere near the best song on the album, was a great video.
3) The all-important second album: Instead of a sophomore slump, the band put out what I think the majority of fans consider their high water mark. It has huge singles, but it's the kind of album where you can imagine almost every song being a successful single. It's enough of a classic now that Hey Johnny Park and February Stars seem like hit singles when you hear them live.
4) Monster singles - Learning to Fly, All My Life, the Pretender, etc. People still were buying albums, and these songs drove those sales.
5) Dave is a likeable guy. He's funny. He's overcome pretty incredible odds. He had an easy enemy (Courtney) to rally against.
6) PR - I think this is the most important thing now. This band does absolutely everything right. They play people's garages, pizza joints, surprise appearances, and Wembley. They put funny shit on the internet and never seem like what they're selling is a money-grab. Their documentary about Wasting Light was way better than Pj20.
7) Their live shows are awesome. Yeah, Dave screams a little too much, but they play all the hits, at least half of the album they're promoting, and a couple of deep cuts. Anyone who doesn't leave happy probably was dragged to the show in the first pllace.
