MARK LANEGAN REVEALS NEW ‘PHANTOM RADIO’ DETAILS & RELEASE DATE
Published On August 12, 2014 | By Paul Kneitz | Featured, Grunge Report
New details regarding singer-songwriter Mark Lanegan’s upcoming album Phantom Radio have been revealed. The new Mark Lanegan Band LP will be released on October 14, according to a Vagrant press release.
For Phantom Radio, Lanegan enlisted the help of friends and past collaborators. The album was produced by Alain Johannes and features co-writes on some of its songs. British guitarist Duke Garwood, who collaborated with Lanegan on their 2013 album Black Pudding, assisted in the creation of “I Am The Wolf.” Dutch violinist Sietse Van Gorkom co-wrote the trip-hop-inspired song “The Killing Season.” On “Floor Of The Ocean,” Lanegan’s girlfriend of the past ten years, Shelley Brien, joins him on vocals.
Lanegan says of “Floor Of The Ocean”: “It’s rare for me to be moved by my own, but that song has a sadness that actually affected me when I heard it back. I’m very fond of it.”
Following in the same recording style as 2012′s Blues Funeral, Lanegan recorded every song he wrote for the album: “[Lanegan] would write a song. Bring it to Alain Johannes, his producer, who then arranged the recording at his West Hollywood studio. Once the song was recorded, Mark took a few days off and then wrote another.”
Phantom Radio tracklist:
01. Harvest Home
02. Judgement Time
03. Floor Of The Ocean
04. The Killing Season
05. Seventh Day
06. I Am The Wolf
07. Torn Red Heart
08. Waltzing In Blue
09. The Wild People
10. Death Trip To Tulsa

New tune Floor Of The Ocean can be heard here:

Of course I'm at work and can't listen so all of you fucks will be able to hear it before me. Since that's the case, be sure to post your impressions
. Lanegan indicated already that it's rare for him to be moved by his own work, but he was moved by this song after he heard it back, so my expectations are high.

Re: Mark Lanegan | Phantom Radio [Oct 14]
Thanks! Has a Depeche mode dark synth pop feel. Curious nasal quality to the vocals. Nice enough song. Hardly a masterpiece, at least on first listen

I only had time for one listen so that was just a somewhat distracted first impression

I dig it. Forgot to mention before, his girlfriend Shelly Brien is singing backup vox on this one. Really comes off as a moody piece after a first listen, this one should be really cool to drive to.

Of all the songs he's done with Alain so far, this one sounds the most Eleven-ish for sure.

Re: Mark Lanegan | Phantom Radio [Oct 14]
Another small article, mostly stuff we've already read except for a few small things. Apparently Torn Red Heart is actually Mark's favorite from the new LP.
Floor Of The Ocean didn't really grab me at first, it was a nice song on first listen. But after a few proper listens it's really starting to grow, pretty much like most of the songs on the EP (except for Dry Iced, still not a big fan of that one).
