SPEENO--bird from hell or lovely peacock. Let's discuss.

If you would, please. Start watching by no sooner than 2:10.

What exactly, musically, is going on between 2:29 - 2:42 that makes that part of the song sound so good...?
I've been trying to put my finger on it but I don't know what it is

That's the moment where that song really takes off. Oh, how I long to hear it live one day...

When you have a quite song where all the parts are defined and then you segue into a new more uptempo uplifting riff in the outro I don't know the technical term is if there is one but those type of transitions are pretty effective at eliciting an emotional response. Other examples would be the outro to the Alice In Chains song 'Don't Follow' and the GnR song 'Patience'.

that part of don't follow is sooo good. but then again everything about don't follow is amazing. that is AIC's best song.

the first part is just that one riff and the descending (i think?) part when he sings "its hard to imagine"

2:29 it changes to a chord progression A-some weird version of A-G. the riff might even be in A, but the change from a riff to a power chord helps effect the mood of the song.

plus, its an incredible song.

This is probably subconsciously reinforced by Eddie singing "things were different then..."

That is a bold statement and I feel that I may agree.

I really like Alice in Chains, but I think Don't Follow is awful.

Rotten Apple and Nutshell are great, but the rest of Jar of Flies is some of my least favourite material in their catalogue (not counting the post-Layne stuff, which I have no interest in.

Think I'll throw Sludge Factory on.

I was trying to figure out just exactly what it was. I'm not sure it's only a simple A to G though.

I was thinking it was either

A) magic,

B) the known anticipation of the band "hitting it" coming right up, or

B) the surprise of a wonderfully-placed sans solo

Its really heavy and gloomy. Just not in the music, but in the lyrics and overall feeling.

Hard to Imagine has a cool feel, and some powerful elements that seem to touch on a lot of the band's other sounds without repeating them, but is decidedly undercooked. That's actually a really good combination for outtakes, in general.
