If we're being honest, aren't most second albums better? I can actually think of very few cases where this is not true. Hence people listing approximately 1,000 albums in this thread. In my experience it is typically only nostalgia or cred-farming that makes people say the debut is the best. Almost every band peaks with their middle work before things get stale.

I'd say it's probably 50/50. I think a lot of bands struggle with the second album. A lot of times you'll find ones that have higher high points, but are far more inconsistent than the debuts.

For what it's worth, the third album seems to be where a stunning number of bands do their best work.

-Big Business - Here Come the Waterworks
-Bjork - Post

-Danzig - Danzig II: Lucifuge
-Dog Faced Hermans - Hum of Life
-Fuel - Something Like Human
-Killdozer - Snakeboy
-Only Living Witness - Innocents
-A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step
-Placebo - Without You I'm Nothing
-Rage Against the Machine - Evil Empire (This is probably an unpopular opinion.)
-Weezer - Pinkerton
Definitely agree about Bjork. My opinion is that RATM's third album was their best, but that is probably even more unpopular than what you said.
I adore the battle of la....not sure about that though. I listen to that album a lot
