A small part of the park across the street from my condo has been dedicated by the city to providing housing for those in need. This housing is about two blocks down from where I live.

Almost everyone in my condo is white. Almost everyone in the support housing is African American. Recently, some of the teenagers have begun jumping the fence and using my pool. They cannot swim. Discuss.

out of the friends list i have probably 30 are people i interact at least every other day. the rest are just family or people i went to school. i imagine most have me hidden as i have hidden them but the majority of my friends i interact with are all people with an offbeat sense of humor otherwise i dont have many of those types of friends that i can see

We're never going to know exactly what happened (rarely do we), so the information of character MUST play a role, because you're dealing with What If's, Most Likelys and Could Haves.

or we could wait to learn more of the facts and only comment on the facts we know to this point (no character studies necessary).

Gotta agree with Skitch. Character matters, so long as you can separate prejudices/stereotypes from whatever you find out. Why else did people want the name of the cop, but to investigate his past behavior and character?

As for how often this happens, it is far too much. Like national shame too much. BUT, that shouldn't change the investigation of this specific instance of violence. Focusing on the militarization of cops and/or the racist legacy in America may be good for covering the protests, but distracts from the search for justice in the Michael Brown incident.

Twitter has been an outstanding tool for live on-site news and firsthand accounts from media and protesters alike.

Yeah, no shit. Misinformation can be anywhere, and sometimes you have to cull through the noise. But pretty much every live firsthand account I saw on Twitter as it happened on Sunday night was corroborated by traditional media the next day. It's usually pretty easy to tell who to follow, who is being truthful, and what is blatant propaganda.

It's usually pretty easy to tell who to follow, who is being truthful, and what is blatant propaganda.

If you are a intelligent person such as yourself, willing to take an objective look, yes. If you are angry and scared and have lived under a cloud of racism and class discrimination your whole life, maybe not so much. It's very easy to isolate yourself in social networks to where you are only exposed to viewpoints that you have already prejudged to be true and these can fuel lies and taint information in ways that cannot be reversed.
