Assemble this line-up

Post by The Argonaut »

I made up a game involving actual stats from the 2013 MLB season. The game invents players based on the actual distribution of these three stats for the 252 players with the most plate appearances. Each stat for each player is determined independently. blah blah, whatever.
Basically: How would you assemble this line-up, 1 to 9. These are made-up players based on stats from the 2013 MLB season. The stats are .OBP (NOT AVG), HRs, and SBs.

.OBP/HR/SB
A: .304/3/20
B: .328/8/13
C: .291/13/45
D: .366/10/13
E: .328/21/5
F: .366/8/8
G: .328/10/5
H: .338/21/20
I: .328/30/0

interesting. Mine is almost the same, but switch 1 with 2 and 3 with 4. The 1/2 switch can go either way for me, but hitting .338/21/20 in the three hole before .328/30/0 is an easy choice for me. Still plenty of pop, higher .OBP, and more speed is the better overall hitter to me, so he belongs in the third spot.

D: .366/10/13
F: .366/8/8
H: .338/21/20
I: .328/30/0
E: .328/21/5
G: .328/10/5
B: .328/8/13
A: .304/3/20
C: .291/13/45

I read H as a .328 OBP. He belongs in the 3 spot.

In general, my thinking is as follows:

1: highest OBP with some speed
2: high OBP, speed if possible
3: best overall hitter, must have some pop
4: emphasis on power, good OBP
5: power to protect clean-up hitter
6: more protection, so good OBP or some pop, whatever you can get
7: better than #8
8: not as good as #7
9: if you have some speed or OBP that didn't fit at the top of the line-up, this becomes your second lead-off hitter. if not, this spot goes to your worst hitter.

I really have to disagree with this. The job of the number five hitter is to force the pitcher to pitch to the clean-up hitter. The only way to do that is with some power. Speed is really unimportant in the five hole. It's more like the guy who would bat fourth if your clean-up guy was injured.

I thought about that. Who knows who the #5 guy is though. Maybe he has some good gap power? Maybe he hits righties and lefties equally? Maybe he is a good RBI guy?

Excited to see who these players are. This is way too much fun for a baseball nerd like me.

I know lineup construction has little impact on a game, but it continues to baffle me how managers can have no concept of how to put a lineup together. I'm sure they're getting better, but once in a while you see a team put someone with little-to-no on-base skills at the top of the lineup because he's fast. SO many managers just want to stick with traditional lineup construction that they hurt their team.

I read once the #2 hitter sometimes over the course of a season will have more plate appearances with RISP.

So, are these lineups are really only important for the first inning? After that you're basically starting each inning at a random spot in the lineup, right?

Well the higher you are in the order the more plate appearances you will have throughout the year. That sounds like John Madden.
