well yeah, non profits that coordinate research for an illness need money to operate just like any for profit business. that pie graph breakdown looks reasonable to me.
Let's hope it changes after the sudden injection of cash.
i'm sure they'll bump it up, but if there are people expecting 100% of the donations to go towards just the research division, they're complete rubes.
But that is possible. see above.

According to the ECFA, a charitable watchdog, 27% of donations actually making it to the cause they are donated to is unacceptable. In fact, the ECFA won't deem a non-profit as a reliable charity unless at least 80% of donations make it to their intended projects.

the money is being donated to the als foundation, which is the cause, so that doesn't even make sense.

I'm with spike here. "Public & Professional Education," "Patient & Community Services," & "Research" make up 78% of that pie chart (which only adds up to 99% itself). I don't see how any of those three things are areas that a person making a donation wouldn't expect their money to end up being spent in.

Either way, look at the site this article is on. It's a fucking joke. I mean, the other top headlines are...

"AL GORE ADMITS THAT GLOBAL WARMING IS A MYTH."

"RESEARCH FRAUD: VACCINE LINK TO AUTISM COVERED UP BY TOP SCIENTISTS."

"ISIS: TERROR ATTACK AGAINST THE U.S. WITHIN 2 WEEKS."

"SHOCK: GANG MEMBERS REVEAL FED AGENTS PAYING THEM TO START RIOTS."

ALSA's mission:

"Leading the fight to treat and cure ALS through global research and nationwide advocacy while also empowering people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support."

Which definitely covers that 78%.

Looks like the CEO of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America is the real winner.

They didn't even count the 19% that goes to patient and community services, which is absurd.

Seriously. To a lot of people that would be THE most important reason to donate.

Especially considering the symptoms of the disease.

Also the effectiveness of awareness raising campaigns does go hand in hand with controversies often. I've recently read about the British pancreatic cancer awareness campaign which run on the slogan "i wish i had breast/testicular cancer" which understandably caused a lot of outrage.

It's such a shame the childhood leukemia people never figured out that the best way to get people to care about a cause is to give them an opportunity to showboat on social media.

It's not about "caring" as i'm sure everybody here realises. It is probably the most effective way to raise funds today, specifically because of the social media exhibitionism. I may be even more cynical than you are in my view of this, because i don't think you couldn't get most people to care in any way whatsoever.
