Re: What movies are you watching?
ok, but as far as Boyhood goes you can't really be serious that there are no good reasons for liking it. I'm not huge on Linklater films myself, but Boyhood was effective in doing what it intended to do. It's not like it was completely baseless. I can accept it not being someone's bag, it didn't really blow me away either, but I can recognize it's purpose and merit on an objective level.

As far as far Godzilla was concerned, I'm willing to hear you out on this but...

Frankly, I don't really see it's purpose or merit on a subjective level. Here's why:Dev wrote:ok, but as far as Boyhood goes you can't really be serious that there are no good reasons for liking it. Regarding Godzilla, I'm gonna be recording a podcast on it fairly soon. In the meantime, I've already discussed my feelings on it at length in the comments here: http://filmcolossus.com/godzilla/#analysis

I don't read reviews, so maybe I'm totally out of touch, but who the fuck is saying this is the greatest American film since the Godfather?

“Creating a character and situations that people identify with just isn’t accomplishing much.” This is where I think you’re wrong, and I assume on Linklater’s part that he was trying to make something superficial, or appeal to a preset audience. If anything the fact that the movie speaks to so many people probably validates it’s authenticity in some way. I think your problem with the film is that it doesn’t speak to you, and while I find myself in the same camp (I can't relate very much), I can recognize the truth inherent in the movie, even if it isn’t my truth.LoathedVermin72 wrote:That I am.Dev wrote:you're jordan, right?LoathedVermin72 wrote:Frankly, I don't really see it's purpose or merit on a subjective level. Re: What movies are you watching?
I think the people it's appealing to aren't examining why it's appealing to them, and I think the movie is specifically tailored to them (which I talk about more in depth during the episode). I don't think that a lot of people thinking a movie is good means shit; consensus means nothing to me.Dev wrote:“Creating a character and situations that people identify with just isn’t accomplishing much.” This is where I think you’re wrong, and I assume on Linklater’s part that he was trying to make something superficial, or appeal to a preset audience. A lot of people, man. The thing has like 100% ratings on review aggregators and critics and (certain types of) audiences are practically falling over themselves in adulation.durdencommatyler wrote:I don't read reviews, so maybe I'm totally out of touch, but who the fuck is saying this is the greatest American film since the Godfather?

In the most general terms, white, liberal, and mostly male. Obviously those aren't the ONLY people liking it, but primarily. Status quo for the film community.durdencommatyler wrote:What does "certain types" of audiences mean?
