“Creating a character and situations that people identify with just isn’t accomplishing much.” This is where I think you’re wrong, and I assume on Linklater’s part that he was trying to make something superficial, or appeal to a preset audience. If anything the fact that the movie speaks to so many people probably validates it’s authenticity in some way. I think your problem with the film is that it doesn’t speak to you, and while I find myself in the same camp (I can't relate very much), I can recognize the truth inherent in the movie, even if it isn’t my truth.

I think the people it's appealing to aren't examining why it's appealing to them, and I think the movie is specifically tailored to them (which I talk about more in depth during the episode). I don't think that a lot of people thinking a movie is good means shit; consensus means nothing to me.
