Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

Pure Heroine is a pretty solid album.
It is, I liked Lorde, and royals for that matter, before it really blew up. Obviously I got pretty sick of that song, but the album still holds up.
White Teeth Teens is a fantastic song.

Mike

Fiona Apple—This is decent, but it’s not a favorite of mine.
Joanna Newsom – I think her voice is kind of annoying, so the cleverness of what she does is lost on me
My Bloody valentine—welp, this got Speeno’s vote. Not a fan of distorted fuzz rock like this in general, but this was a particularly unappealing song
Bonny Price Billy-see my comments for every previous BPB song. I like the song, but one song is usually just the right amount
Tallest man on earth-It’s like a shriller version of the more annoying aspects of Bob Dylan.

This reminds me that I meant to draft Duquesne Whistle

Sigur Ros: The music was really cool, but the vocals were distracting. I wanted this to be an instrumental
Animal Collective: Wow, what an irritating song.
Okkervil River: I think I liked the song you had from these guys in the last decade more
The National: not bad, especially given how little I normally care about these guys
Fleet Foxes: this was decent, but some of the harmonies felt like they were a bit much

I gotta say, while I thought Mike put a real good team together last tournament, this really didn’t click with me in the slightest.

Vote for DSB.

Maybe it's different in Australia, but to me it seems that, with cross-marketing and social media, the songs that reach that level of ubiquity do so because they're blasted at you from virtually every direction-- movies, television, shopping malls, the internet, et al.
yup

I've heard that M83 song (and by song I mean its only cool bit) mostly because it was in ads and tv shows. I had never heard the entire song before this tournament though. And there's just not much to see except for that famous part.

I thought M83 were pretty popular in the same way the shins or BoH are. Surely you've all heard teen angst?

Nope. Well, NOW I have.

It really isn't difficult:

I don't listen to radio.
Most of my TV watching is ad-free or ad-fast-forwardable.
I don't do clubs, and music in malls/restaurants is just background noise.
Not that many movies make use of the latest tracks.
If you don't seek something out on the internet, it doesn't just pop up magically.
My friends are all past the stage of saying "You HAVE to listen to this new track" beyond the occasional Facebook post.
I don't stream my music - it's all tucked away in a self-organised folder.

That's actually heartening that we don't all have the same exposure. It's little things you notice when you've lived in a few spots. I haven't heard Queen's Don't Stop Me Now for I don't know how long. In the UK, you'd be lucky to go a week or month.

Teen Angst was everywhere in 2005. But maybe just in certain radio stations (Sydney's FBI and 2Ser plus I think triple J). Ah well.

I don't listen to the radio, except ABC Classic FM on the odd occasion - I guess that's part of it.

Oddly I haven't listened to much radio in the last 20 yrs except between 2004 and 2007. FBI is a great station. And BBC radio has some awesome presenters and segments.

Also I've worked in TV since 2007 and there are certain styles of tracks that are used over and over especially on promos. Hello 'Alone In Kyoto'.

This is basically me except I still watch traditional TV once in a while so some things will fall through the cracks.

Fell down a small flight of stairs exiting a jazz club named THE BORIS. Wasnt' hurt, just a bit of lost dignity. I now understand the phrase "save face" on a different level cause as I got up and started composing myself it really felt like my face was disintegrating. I hadnt had gin since my sister's wedding 2 years ago fuck

VARIS
Bohren and der club of bore – nice mood piece
The National-not bad
Low-I really liked this one. This is maybe the best thing I’ve heard from the last 3 playlists I’ve hard.
Beach House – This was okay. I liked Platy’s beach house song more. It has nothing to do with Norway, which is a beautiful country
Endless Boogie – this song promised exactly what was advertised. Not bad, but I wanted a better solo in a nine minute song
Hanni El Khatib – I know varis is a fan of this kind of stuff. Me, not so much
Dawes – Not usually into this kind of Neil Young influenced classic rock sound. Definitely sounds like a throwback song and it’s always cool to see people pull that off
Foals – Another multi million views song that I’ve never heard. Pretty cool little song
Mogwai – This felt like an instrumental from the National.
Nick Cave – this is a great song. I should probably get this album

a weaker second half that ends quite strong

KP

Rival Sons- Another convincing 70s throwback. Not sure I’d seek these guys out, but I liked this song.
Charles Bradley – See my rival sons comment
Cat Power – I’ve made this comment with a number of other artists. I’ve never sought her out, and don’t feel the need to, but the individual songs of hers that pop up I almost always think are pretty good
How to Destroy angels – another millions song I don’t know. Not bad. A touch melodramatic, but that could just be the video talking
Killing Joke- not a fan of this at all
Mark Lanegan – quite possibly a top 5 lanegan song. I would have drafted this if it wasn’t already taken and if I wasn’t a little gunshy from Meth Blues not going over as well as I had hoped
Mantra – a nice example of a room of very talented people doing something pretty boring together
Puscifier – this didn’t do much for me. A little too by the numbers.
Uncle Acid...- not my thing
Von Hertzen Brothers – also not my thing

This started out pretty promising. I liked 5 of the first 6 songs, and Gravedigger is one of my favorite songs by everyone. But on the other hand, I was pretty bored by 5 of the last 6 songs.

I think Varis BARELY takes this one. Close though
