You need a new one if it's visibly bent or you hear distortion or a lack of bass right across the record. Meanwhile you could be damaging your records if you keep using it.

If you aren't picky you can probably just replace the stylus and keep your existing cart (they typically snap on). You just need to look up the model and find a replacement for sale online or ebay. However I would probably take this opportunity to upgrade the cart and you'll feel like you're hearing your records for the first time. If you're using your TT a lot, it's well worth the investment.

so how do you know you need a new one?
It's old and I'm noticing things don't sound as good as they used to.

Picked up Them Crooked Vultures and listened to it this weekend. What a massaive sonic upgrade from the mp3s I had been relying on for the last 3.5 years.

Indeed...There's quite a bit going on in alot of those songs and mp3 ain't no way to listen to that album.

Satisfied with my second order from Soundstage Direct:

Sleater-Kinney - "Dig Me Out" (the "bend in cover" is so slight that it's almost unnoticeable)
Eddie Vedder - "Better Days" (not really sure how rare this is, but it was cheap and will be cool to have)
Brad - "Welcome to Discovery Park" (this was the first CD I ever ordered on Amazon.com! Oh, memories)

Yes, exactly. One of those experiences where you've heard the songs before, but they really come alive and you keep thinking "damn this is such a great album!"

Waiting to pick my sister up at long beach airport. Randomly decided to swing by Fingerprints to kill time.
Scored Gomez - Abandoned Shopping Trolley Hotline for $20.00 and a free concert from Low. Good times!

so what's the consensus here about the Mono version of Are You Experienced? I've read some great reviews elsewhere.

Grabbed a near mint first pressing of Joni Mitchell's Blue (cover is a little beaten up, but the wax is clean) and Stevie Wonder's Talking Book. Again, cover is dinged and well lived-in, but the record, though dusty, sounds great. No real flaws, just needs a good cleaning.

Some guy came in here and said a bunch of stuff but never actually heard it so we don't have a consensus :)

If the reviews are mixed, there must be a reason. I've also heard that the the MOV label (?) will be release a mono AYE, so it might be worth waiting for the internet to tell you what to do.

It mostly sounds like shit. Made from US production copy tapes. Sounds just as bad, if not worse than the UK original. It appears that something went wrong in the mastering/copying process of the original tapes, which have vanished. Contrary to popular belief, this album isn't supposed to sound like shit. The French second pressing sounds excellent. Unfortunately it's impossible to find and seems to have been pirated as well. Pretty frustrating. But nobody knows the difference anyway. Just crank it up loud and forget that it sounds like it was recorded in a toilet.

However, the Axis: Bold As Love mono is excellent. They appear to have the actual master tape for that.
