People like to band together and universally hate something. U2 just timed this poorly, when there is no current "Rebecca Black", or Justin Bieber wasn't doing something stupid.

I think U2 would've been better selling their album and donating 100% of the proceeds to ALS or whatever is considered as the current trending charity.

I like half of it but I like half of every U2 album so it's good enough for me.

Even when U2 fucks up it's usually pretty mesmerizing (see: Rattle and Hum)

I adore everything about U2 in that era....the ambition, the insistence on aiming higher than any rational thought could endorse, the willingness to expose or ridicule themselves to a point beyond all hope of humility or recovery, if it all went wrong....that beautiful and true marrying of sarcasm and earnestness, wherein the two sides became so at home with each other that it was impossible (often within a single lyric or motion) to know where one started and the other began.

It's hard to believe the Bono we know today is the one who once appeared on stage in a glittering gold suit and devil horns, surrounded by slogans like "beLIEve" and "art | trash | love," dancing around on discarded cash. On the other hand, it's a weirdly prophetic moment....the Bono of 1990-93 was openly mocking the man he would later become, with surreal exactness of detail.

Good stuff, McP. I've been on a U2 kick lately.

Just watched From the Sky Down for the first time, found it really interesting. A great look into the development of Achtung. And, I've been all about the Pop era music recently. I never gave it much replay back then. I've certainly come back to it. The 1998 shows are really strong (Santiago, in particular), right before the tours got mucked up with the "return to form" stuff that plagued that 00 decade albums.
