Ha!

(Though I'm a Liberal voter, so...)

I honestly don't mind Abbott (though I certainly couldn't have imagined having said that back in my left-leaning days). He strikes me as a relatively sober and thoughtful guy most of the time.

We have our general election next weekend. It's kind of an interesting time in the Rangi household as both Mrs Rangi and I are on different sides of the center line

So technically your votes cancel each other out, right?

Pretty much, and up till that point we have heated discussions about which party is better for the country/people.

Might as well keep posting NZ politics stuff in here.

So last night Mr Kim Dotcom had a big press release in which he said would prove that the NZ govt had lied to us etc and we'd all be shocked to our core and other junk. Eric Snowden and Julian Assange were part of it via a video link. Pretty much it came down to them telling us that the NZ govt had the powers to tap into our Emails, texts, Interwebs history etc.... Oh and being as self serving as he is Dotcom aslo produced an Email supposedly between Hollywood studios and the NZ govt talking about giving Dotcom quick recidency so they could extradite him to the US. All up - all the claims were pretty vague and the next day it appears that no-one really cares

Election over. Governing party got in for a third term - finished stronger then when they went in on their second term.
I'm pretty happy about it - Mrs Rangi is pretty cut up

If you’re an Australian citizen, you have a greater chance of being killed by the following causes than you do by a terrorist attack: slipping in the bathtub and hitting your head; contracting a lethal intestinal illness from the next dinner you eat at a restaurant; being struck by lightning. In the post-9/11 era, there has been no terrorist attack carried out on Australian soil: not one. The attack that most affected Australians was the 2002 bombing of a nightclub in Bali which killed 88 of its citizens; that was 12 years ago.

Despite all that, Australia’s political class is in the midst of an increasingly unhinged fear-mongering orgy over terrorism.
Er:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-09-18/a ... ne/5752002

Police say a large-scale anti-terrorism raid in Sydney this morning has foiled a plot to "commit violent acts" in Australia, including a plan to behead a member of the public.

More than 800 officers launched the raids as part of Operation Appleby in suburbs across Sydney's west and north-west, with a further 70 police involved in raids on properties in Brisbane's south.

Police said 15 people had been detained in Sydney as part of the operation between NSW officers, the Australian Federal Police and ASIO.

Court documents are expected to reveal that the raids, at 25 different properties, were aimed at a cell which planned to behead a member of the public in Sydney.
Well, you know, given the choice, I'd rather not be beheaded in the street by a crazed Islamist.
Abbott assumed the grave demeanor and resolute tone that politicians in these situations don to convince others that they’re the modern incarnation of Winston Churchill: purposeful, unyielding, and courageously ready for the fight. He depicted his fight as one of Pure Good v. Pure Evil, and vehemently denied that his nation’s 10-year support for the invasion and occupation of Iraq plays any role whatsoever in animosity toward his country in that region (perish the thought!)
Yes, it's those dastardly Westerns who are really to blame, of course!
