The Shield

Post by @SkitchP »

So at numbers recommendation I have started watching this show, and over the past month and half or so, Mrs. Skitch and I have made it into season 5.

I like this show, but don't love it. A lot of the acting and writing is dull and cliche. I think my biggest problem is none of the characters are anyone I want to root for, with possibly the exception of CCH Pounder, and even occasionally with her they could have humanized her more. Honestly, I think the best character has been Acevada, but the actor is pretty bad.

It came out during the peak of the anti-hero movement (tony soprano, etc), but Vic is not even one that I have found myself rooting for once. It's fun to play the "when are they setting Vic up for a dramatic line" game though. A lot of the criminal stuff/individual case stuff is interesting. Some of the guest stars thus far have been good- Glenn Close particularly.

The worst part though?
The "previously on" scenes last like 20 minutes it feels like.

and at least 2/3rds of them feature
Spoiler: show
acevada's face rape.

One thing about the shield, I think, is it's best to save judgement until you've finished it. I can't think of another show that wrapped up all the seasons and plots better than The Shield did.

Ive heard the finale is amazing. The hard part for me is i can't see it being possible because I am not invested in any of the characters.

The White Dove in season 2 was about the only thing that really had an emotional impact on me. That was rough.

It's far and away the best finale I've ever seen. I can't even think of another one that's even close for me. If youre not that invested in the main characters though, you might not feel the same. For me, it's a close as a show could get to perfect.

I do get briefly excited and instantly love any episode directed by Clark Johnson.

the finale was awesome, the first 3 seasons of this are absolutely awesome, and then I feel like seasons 4 and 5 kind of suffered a bit (even though Glenn Close was great and I really like Forrest Whitaker too), but the last couple of seasons the show found it's footing again

He was excellent. It's amazing how much he got into that character.

The scene where Vic taunts him about
Spoiler: show
going down on his ex
is pretty epic. Whitaker probably should have gotten himself an Emmy nomination for that one.

Yup, that finale and how everything is wrapped up is awesome. I tend to find a lot of finales dull, but this one delivered in every possible way.

It felt inevitable. No real surprise, which is fine, i dont need a "twist." But dont spend 10 minutes trying to build tension to the obvious ending. Also, I didnt get the lawyer hooking up with Vic.

None of Vic's hookups ever make sense.

Yeah, but that one least so. Previously they would use his hookups as proof of how damaged Vic is, and the women are. With the attorney, it was the only evidence that she's damaged. Just didn't fit. I guess they were trying to set up the idea that she was emotionally invested in Vic, as evidenced by the "be your friend" line later.

Unrelated. I know its a couple years old, but I find it really odd that FX doesn't show reruns of this show still, because despite its flaws, its probably one of the better (non-archer division) properties that FX has.

I liked the finale.

I also love how Clark Johnson credits himself for his minor cameos "Handsome Marshal" or in SWAT as "Handsome Partner"
