he's incredible, glad you dug it

Did anyone see The Congress? It was kind of a total mess, but I also found it incredibly beautiful and hallucinatory, and by the ending I was a total wreck. It was the closest thing I've experienced to tripping on acid or shrooms. Highly recommend it if you get a chance to catch it in theaters.

If you get any chance to see it in the theater, take it. It was just really, really cool.

I've never even heard of the film. But I'll absolutely check it out on Orpheus's recommendation alone.

I may or may not have just watched Blended and I may or may not have thought it was one of the better movies of the year.

OH! It's that Adam Sandler Drew Barrymore thing. I really loved their other projects together. But this looks like vomit took a shit on my favorite relative. But I'll still check it out, probably. Just in case.

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier"

I really liked it, even the painfully obvious 'twists' and overblown ending scene are easily forgivable with the intense action sequences and the respect given to the bad guys in terms of not making them Bain-level stupid. Probably the best superhero movie I have seen since TDK.

Yes. It's entertaining, but palpably disposable. I wanted it to go deeper than it did.

We love kids movies and I've been committed to seeing Boxtrolls since I saw a trailer like 6 months ago. Why just  , if you can explain spoiler-free? (Not that it's a spoiler-ish movie, I'm sure)

Hey, are you on all of the Fifth Opinion Podcasts? I listened to one and really liked it, and if you play your cards right, you could show up in a footnote in my dissertation.

The first 10-15 minutes of Boxtrolls are great, probably the most atmospheric and immersive stop-motion material I’ve seen since The Nightmare Before Christmas. However, it lost me once the “story” kicked in. It became too focused on narrative for my taste; I wanted the atmosphere and near-wordless playfulness back. It also became unrelentingly grotesque; not in an overt, “gross” kind of way, but in uncomfortable way. A lot of little things that just made me like, “I’m not enjoying being in this world.” So yeah, it’s not bad, but definitely a let-down after the great ParaNorman (and the opening 10-15 minutes).

And yes, I am. The core group of me, Janie, Ryan, and Zack appears in every episode. Thanks for listening (and liking)! By all means, go ahead and footnote! Haha. Out of curiosity, what is your dissertation on?

I'm writing about the "new sincerity," which is concerned with the retreat from postmodern irony and a "return" to a mode of expression that's more straightforward and not so bathed in reference, winks, and cheekiness. So I'm always on the lookout for discussions like the one about Quill in the Guardians of the Galaxy episode.
