More or less the same thing. I tend to call anything longer than an 800M interval a "repeat".Sgt. Crackpot wrote:When you guys talk about 'repeats' are these the same as interval running?

13.1 miles in 94 minutes
Half marathon canal route. Probably the most humid day I have ever experienced in PHX and it took its toll on me. I had to take my cell out of my "water resistant" waistbelt because it was soaked from sweat. I was still doing sub-7s at the turnaround, but started a massive fade at mile 9 or so. Ugh. Reminded me of running at my best friend's place in San Antonio. I'll take a bone dry 110 over a humid 90 all fucking day. Fuck that shit.

Re: The Running Thread
Runs have been going well despite tons of other crap, so after a day of running around Saturday I told myself if I run at least ten miles tomorrow I'll sign up for a distance race before Newport. I rolled out of bed and got in 10.2 that morning. I found a half in CT this weekend with 100% of proceeds going to a charity that I had heard of but not looked in to just yet. Hopefully that'll keep me honest just in case I don't log any miles in Colorado.
Also signed up for the Gansett Half in November because apparently I felt I didn't run in Rhode Island enough this year plus it's an 11 am start and a nice drive.
Went for an unplanned run last evening, first outdoor night run and I actually really enjoyed it especially with our weather turning cooler. I should probably get some non-black attire should I choose to do so again though.

Our house has been blitzed by a nasty little virus my son picked up at school. I haven't run since last Wednesday and the chances of me getting out for a run anytime soon is slim.

We've been getting 30 degree swings for the course of the day so trying to stay ahead of any colds, etc. if at all possible. Running home last night in a t-shirt, jeans and boots probably wasn't the best thing but it seemed the most logical way back to my car at the time.
Edit: Just got word of a 5K/10K/20K/50K trail run in October that is half an hour away from home. I have a 5K planned benefiting MS on Saturday the 25th, I think I may add the 10K for Sunday the 26th as my first trail race.
Edit 2: I chose the 20K, the medal pushed me over; it's also benefiting CF so what's another $5... and double the mileage.

20 miles in 2:41
Finally got out for a run. It was nice, but, as usual, I overdid it and put down 20 miles with the youngest in the running stroller. I was still doing 7 to 7:30s at about 12 miles in, but then the humidity got to me and the baby started to fuss. I ended up hitting a Circle K just off the canal for a snack for the baby and some Gatorade for myself. Never really regained my form after that and was probably doing 9:30s at the end.
Feel pretty wasted today, but I may hit yoga class with the wife. Everyone in the house is finally well. I hope this takes care of the Fall Funk in our house, but I'm sure it will come back around.

Re: The Running Thread
Got out of the house and on the road on time with an uneventful drive. Saturday was a fantastic day to run, cooler morning and just clear sky and sun thereafter. You could feel the sun might be a bit of a bear but there was a lot of shade on the course. My pace was right where I wanted it for most of the race, jogged through water stations, no walking. The fact that there were only 475 runners made the stations far easier to manage than the big races though I missed Gatorade every single time which may have had a bit of an effect. I've come to like the GU or CLIF Blocks so I'll bring a pack of those to races from now on.
I believe this was my first race that was a net elevation loss and I felt totally drained around mile eleven, my quads have never been a weak link but this go around they most certainly were. No leg pain like last race, which was a huge plus but my legs getting as tired as they did was a surprise. Very different sore yesterday and today but a solid learning experience I'd say.
Even with the energy depletion I still dropped a few minutes off my overall time, though their distance calculations were about a tenth of a mile off from my Garmin. Considering how I was running I wouldn't be surprised if they were indeed off but who am I to say. On the way back I stopped at two breweries and ended up talking to a few marathoners since it looked like I had been running. Good conversation and I'm looking forward to running a full next year but still seems like a huge endeavor.

Sunday: 4 x 6:30 miles
I decided to bypass the yoga and do some speedwork on Sunday. I started at 6:30 miles, thinking I would go down to 6 or 5:45 miles, but just never felt great. I kinda feel like this may have been the exact workout where my age catches up to me and the possibility of me legitimately being anything better than a 7-minute mile guy ends. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to go longer instead of faster.
Monday: 10 miles in 69 minutes
Legs felt beat to shit, but it was a perfect morning. It's weird, I think my lungs have finally fully recovered from Valley Fever and now it's my legs that are feeling left behind. Nice finishing kick to come in under 70 minutes. Enjoyed an insanely beautiful sunrise.
I did the Rock 'N' Roll Marathon in PHX one year and spent 30 minutes wading through people who should have been in 4:30 corral instead of the 3:30 corral. That was the last big race for me.

Re: The Running Thread
My first was the RnR DC in March, 26K people and a helluva shock for a newbie. MapMyRun had us running over fourteen miles with all the laterals around people/groups, etc. Newport will probably be a tad on the large side since it is heralded as such a scenic race but I think I'll be alright given the views. Naragansett currently has less than 300 entrants thus far, which is kinda awesome.turned2black wrote:Sunday: 4 x 6:30 miles

Re: The Running Thread
Been hitting it pretty hard this week. I did 10 in the morning and 10 at night yesterday. I told a friend last year that I would pace him through the last 50 miles of the Javelina Jundred and I intend to keep that promise. I dipped below 165, which I'm pretty happy about. Would like to get to about 150 by the end of the month.
I also signed up the Zane Grey 50, which is generally considered the toughest 50-miler in the U.S. I hope to do at least 2 races this race season instead of the one race a year shit I have been doing the past couple of years.

Re: The Running Thread
Good on ya t2b
Got in around 10 miles between running and hiking in Colorado this weekend. Friend was paranoid about the altitude but my first run (four miles) felt good and I ran about twenty seconds under race pace each mile. Felt pretty good
Well, as things devolve I am no longer staying over in Newport before the race Sunday morning. Shuttle service only with packet pick-up at the race start, which makes little sense to me but that would make for a ridiculous rush along with the two hour drive for an 8 am start.
I think I'll head up Saturday for packet pick-up and try to hit lunch and a brewery somewhere on the way back and drive back Sunday morning. Current weather forecasts around clear, 50° and light wind for the race, should be nice.
Edit: t2b, any advice for my first trail race in a few weeks?

Re: The Running Thread
My biggest piece of advice is to NOT feel like you have to run the ups. A lot of newer trail runners tell themselves that they want to "run" everything, so they end up expending way too much energy on the ups. My advice is to power hike the ups and take in some calories, then kill the downs and flats. Even elite level guys hike ups.oasisfan35 wrote:Edit: t2b, any advice for my first trail race in a few weeks?

Depending on how rocky it is, you may want to think about gaiters. I don't use them, but I also end up picking a lot of rocks out of my shoes.
If it's a single track trail, don't be afraid to scream at people when coming up behind them. "On your right!" is a common phrase I yell at people. This is a race, don't be overly polite. You'll notice a lot of idiots trying to run two abreast on a trail that's 5 or 6 feet wide. Feel free to murder them.

Re: The Running Thread
Cool, thanks much man. After doing the extreme hike, which technically wasn't a race but of course it was, I gathered how much the ups take out of you moving at a faster than standard hiking pace. I'll definitely not be running those, especially with some climbing areas over the route. The 10/20/50K are simply repeats of the 10K loop, 5K is a separate loop, so I'll get two shots at it. I don't expect the Garmin to get the mileage totally accurate but I'll surely compare the two loop times.
Also, in the not running theme, I don't have a pair of 'trail running' shoes but I'd say my cross-trainers would be a better bet than my standard runners. Looking forward to it, plus it's limited to 150 people and not full so shouldn't be too crowded. I haven't been to the area in probably 15 years so that'll be a nice bit of inspiration to think back to and then simply nail the downs and flats.
Seeing as there is basically zero chance I'll be doing the CF hike again, I should probably start looking for trail runs more often.

Re: The Running Thread
Up at 3am yesterday and on the road around 4. Easy goin' ride in to Newport, was happy I remember the area from July since I hit a coffee shop before getting stuck in the parking traffic queue and racing to the shuttle. Check in and gear check was well set up so I had about a half hour to kill before race time. I basically jogged in circles around the building because it was fucking cold with a fairly constant wind. Waiting in the corral the gal next to me was visibly shivering. I, as well as everyone else I'm sure, was very happy when the race started.
Sun felt great and though it never got too warm it was very comfortable to run in. I had a feeling this was going to be a difficult race for myself, been a bit busy with life so the only miles I logged since the last half two weeks ago was Denver. Right leg held up fine, my left started feeling pretty much the same as my right did in Jamestown. Understanding what was going on made it a lot easier to run. Sure there was pain but I had some really good stretches of solid pace. Some very nice views and just the right amount of hills that made for a really nice course. Out of the three in Rhode Island I ran this year I'd choose Newport to run again.
Quads felt nothing like the race a few weeks ago and I finished much stronger. Shaved 2:55 off my best time and felt I paced myself well, started off a bit faster than pace again, which I'd like to get away from holding a bit in the tank for a stronger second half. In time I'm sure.
Three races left for '14: 5K, 20K trail, Narragansett Half.

Nice work, man.
I only got in one run during our trip to San Diego/Carlsbad. But it was a killer run up to Cabrillo National Monument and back. It was around 14 miles.
I also ate about 6,000 calories a day on the trip and destroyed my diet.
Also, apparently the entire city of Carlsbad runs. I would get up early to grab breakfast for the family and every morning I would see hundreds of runners. It was awesome to see.

Re: The Running Thread
I did it in 35:26, which isn't good but I wasn't expecting to keep a 5mph pace for that long either. More important was I felt fine afterwards other than being a little tired & sweaty. Not that sore.
Of course you get a lot of people handing flyers for other races. There's one next week where you start at 1:50am and then there's a big pajama party afterward. I'm thinking about doing that, it would be different for sure.
