My Perspective on why:

Event Horizon was released in during the Micheal Crichton Obsession era of the early-mid nineties that started with Jurassic Park, and led to classics like Congo. And Event Horizon unfortunately (based entirely on trailers) was basically a poor mans version of Sphere. Of course the movie Sphere turned out to be incredibly disappointing. If I recall, I think Sphere was the favorite of 14 year old me. So I refused to see the knock off of it.

Event Horizon came out before Sphere, man. And I assume that description of Congo was a joke...

Event Horizon came out before the Sphere MOVIE, but at that point, most of the movie going public was reading Micheal Crichton like crazy. And had read Sphere, and were eagerly anticipating the movie.

And Congo is amazing if only for

Absolutely. (Sphere) I quite enjoyed the book, but the movie was cut down to nothing but rubbish.

Agreed 100%. For me, those movies rank in their release order. The AVP movies were just bland action movies.

Prometheus is braindead horseshit.
And yet still so much better than Event Horizon.

Sphere is probably the worst movie mentioned in this thread so far. Event Horizon is scores better than Sphere.

I'm not sure it's a great movie, but I've never been more scared watching a film than when I saw Event Horizon in theaters.
