Several moments in the film were very darkly comedic. I wish it had committed to that tone, which would fit with the media satire of the story. It fluctuates between playing it safe and being over-the-top, and ends up just being off-putting.

I feel like Brian De Palma would've done a good version of this, which goes well with what I've read about the book.

BurtReynolds wrote:Christ. He just made a movie where every male character was either a vicious rapist, serial killer (of women), or at best, an adulterer and womanizer. Go watch that one if you demand movies conform to your list of approved narratives. Or shove your bullshit notions of artist's responsibility in a sack and have a little faith in humanity's ability to separate fact from fiction.

Ugh, the most loathsome form of art criticism... You need to be offended.
What a load of bullshit. D.W. Griffith followed up The Birth of a Nation with Intolerance. Does that somehow mean The Birth of a Nation is now magically not racist? Of course not! That's a total straw man.

When did I say artists have a responsibility? I never said artists have to do anything. But that doesn't mean I'm not going to call it out if one does something I think is irresponsible. No one has to be responsible, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t shitty not to be.

I need to be offended? Seriously? You’re the one throwing a tantrum over my subjective thoughts on a movie.

I’m not some braindead PC thug just throwing “I’m offended” (I never even said it offended me) at things I disagree with. I HATE that kind of mentality. But, hey, has it ever occurred to you that some people might have issues they genuinely have a strong moral position on? Things they genuinely think are important? And has it ever occurred to you that perhaps art that is consumed en masse like Gone Girl can have a subconscious effect on a lot of people? And even if you don’t think art can affect the consciousness of a society, does that mean I still can’t criticize something I think was created from a toxic, negative viewpoint?

Are you fucking kidding me? Lol.

You don't say artists are responsible, yet you label this movie as 'irresponsible'. Do you even read what you type? You Are clearly offended. Go watch Michael Bay shit out a toy commercial please.

Nice reading comprehension skills, pal. Enjoy your smug conclusions and judgments you've made about me. You are clearly are not interested in actually having a discussion or being open-minded.

I think I'm still too angry about True Detective not having any strong female characters to watch Gone Girl.

I dont agree at all with LoathedVermin72 view, but i understand how he might see that. A lot of people accused this movie of being full of misogyny. For me, its pretty much the other way around; its very honest and it touches the subject of men and women in a different light.
And the male characters are even worst than the female ones.

I'm genuinely curious about how you could possibly think that. I cannot see any angle of how that could possibly be true.

As much as this board is in dire need of a flame war, I really am not interested in discussing how someone can accuse one of being irresponsible while simultaneously holding him free of responsibility, then list several reasons why he is responsible. My Mind just doesn't open that far. I fear what I would find such a dark place.

Nick cheats on his wife. Neil P is a creep (but when did he ever keep her captive?). Okay.

On the other hand, Amy lies about being raped to ruin a guy's life. She lies about being killed to ruin another guy's life (and potentially kill him via electric chair). And, finally, she lies about Neil P imprisoning her and raping her before murdering him in cold blood. How on earth does any of that translate to the men being worse than Amy?

Spoiler: show
It basically comes down to watching poor schlub Ben Affleck and poor schlub Scoot McNairy and poor schlub Neil Patrick Harris get their lives destroyed by stone-cold-evil "crazy bitch" Rosamund Pike.
Spoiler: show
But (in the book, at least) those guys are hardly sympathetic characters. They're all super disturbing characters. They're liars and sociopaths and rapists. Whereas Amy, though also psychopath, has much more sympathy. It's a revenge story where no one is worth rooting for. You want everyone to lose. Which is why the ending is so, so, SOOOO fucking terrible.
