Re: MLB
The Brewers got a kid sitting at AAA whos hit some bombs this spring... who, from what they say, is "only a Left Fielder" (aka no range for CF, no arm for RF, and no glove for INF) and hes kinda blocked by Braun... would love to see the Crew trade him for some pitching help... I just dont see the Yankees coming after a "prospect" when they want to win now / need help today.

Re: MLB
I know they are claiming to want to save money and build from the farm up, but every move by them this year seems to have me looking sideways. Other than resigning Rivera for another year, and taking another chance on Pettitte, I can't say I liked much of any of their moves. Letting Martin go without a suitable replacement on the horizon was dumb, letting Swisher go and then getting desperate and replacing his production with Vernon Wells is the height of terrible, signing Youkilis for so many millions when they could have just gone for...say...resigning Chavez was very strange. My guess is that they've lucked out so much the past few years on taking aging flyers on a few guys that they decided to stack their roster with them. It's gonna hurt, and bad.verb_to_trust wrote:This would have been a fantastic move.........five years ago.philpritchard wrote:I can't express how excited I am that the Yankees are on the verge of acquiring Vernon Wells.

Watching the Yankees this year is going to be like watching the Lawerence Welk show.

Oh yeah, guaranteed contracts are awesome, for Johan Santana and Mike Hampton anyway.

Re: MLB
What's everyone's predictions?
AL Divisions: Rays (East), Tigers (Central), Angels (West)*
Wildcards: Blue Jays, Rangers
ALCS: Tigers over Angels
NL Divisions: Nationals (East)*, Reds (Central), Giants (West)
Wildcards: Braves, Cardinals
NLCS: Reds over Nationals
World Series: Tigers over Reds so that Jim Leyland can finally retire in peace.
* - best record in respective league.
Note: I am a Yankee fan and a relatively optimistic fan at that, and I am not expecting them to win more than say 86 wins.

I'm guessing there's going to be at least $45 million per year in wasted payroll between him and Fielder in about 5 years from now.@SkitchP wrote:Chris_H_2 wrote:A worse contract than Verlander's?@SkitchP wrote:So Verlander is locked up through 2020. Maybe not done, but certainly not a $23 million a year pitcher. I hope I'm wrong and I eat crow, but I think his innings start catching up to him.@SkitchP wrote:You think JV will be done by 35?Chris_H_2 wrote:I'm guessing there's going to be at least $45 million per year in wasted payroll between him and Fielder in about 5 years from now.@SkitchP wrote:Chris_H_2 wrote:A worse contract than Verlander's?@SkitchP wrote:So Verlander is locked up through 2020. I hope not either, but if Detroit didn't give him this contract now, someone else would have (and then some) after 2014.

Re: MLB
Probably. But if someone else wanted to give him a huge deal when he's 32, I still wouldn't have a problem with it. They're going to have to re-tool one of these days.@SkitchP wrote:Chris_H_2 wrote:Maybe not done, but certainly not a $23 million a year pitcher. so basically you just want them to sign guys to nothing but one year deals?

Re: MLB
You pay superstars a lot of money into their late thirties when you lock them up in long term deals. Sure, you'll be paying more than he's worth on the back end but that's how you sign guys. It's either that or you don't have an elite pitcher.

I was explaining to my fiancée how little money the Astros are spending on payroll this year and said that they are "probably the worst team in the league." She responded with, "What about the...um...the um...what are they called, the 'Red Sox'?" We both had a good chuckle.

Re: MLB
I think it's funny that people had a much higher opinion of last year's Red Sox team going into the season than they do this seasons'. Not that this years Red Sox team is that good, but last year's was one of the most poorly assembled teams you could put together.
