Re: What movies are you watching?
I thought the first half of (Chronicles of) Riddick (the stuff on the prison planet) was entertaining enough. The problem is all the forced epic Chosen One bullshit shoehorned in. Coulda been a simple little movie like Pitch Black was, but nooooooooooooooo.
That and Vin Diesel is so lame.

Watched Risky Business and Shivers last night. The former had a hell of a great style/atmosphere. I also think I can officially name Tom Cruise as one of my favorite actors of all time. The latter had a buttfuckingly awesome opening 10-15 minutes but gradually became less and less interesting. It was okay in the end.

I like a handful of Tom Cruise's films, but I hardly ever like him in them. There are a couple exceptions. Risky Business is okay, I guess. Not a huge fan, though. It's better than Top Gun, I'll say that.

He just always gives 110%. I've never seen him phone it in. It seems like he has a very genuine passion for acting. And his charisma is off the fucking charts - he commands the screen like few can. The guy is just a fucking star.durdencommatyler wrote:I like a handful of Tom Cruise's films, but I hardly ever like him in them. There are a couple exceptions. Risky Business is okay, I guess. You take that back - Top Gun is at the pinnacle of movies!durdencommatyler wrote:I like a handful of Tom Cruise's films, but I hardly ever like him in them. There are a couple exceptions. Risky Business is okay, I guess. Not a huge fan, though. It's better than Top Gun, I'll say that.

I generally enjoy a Tom Cruise blockbuster, as long as I don't pay too much attention.
And if we're talking Cruise cameos - Tropical Thunder wins hands down. Though I guess that's stretching "cameo".

It will probably always be in my top 10 - I think it's mainly nostalgic reasons. Watched Top Gun so many times as a kid.durdencommatyler wrote:Rangi Guy wrote:You take that back - Top Gun is at the pinnacle of movies!durdencommatyler wrote:I like a handful of Tom Cruise's films, but I hardly ever like him in them. Yes, I really don't get the hate. I don't think he's ever ruined a film for me.
And sorry if this got lost in the Gone Girl mess, but did you ever see Upstream Color?

Re: What movies are you watching?
I totally get that. There are plenty of movies I feel that way about. Top Gun just never grabbed me when I was young like it did all my friends. Not sure why.Rangi Guy wrote:It will probably always be in my top 10 - I think it's mainly nostalgic reasons. Re: What movies are you watching?
I'd agree that I don't think he's ever ruined a movie for me. I think, for me, I think what vermin is calling charisma and star quality overshadow the work. He is passionate, but a lot of times it's way too big and has next to no depth. Again, there are exceptions.broken iris wrote:LoathedVermin72 wrote:He just always gives 110%. I certainly don't hate him as an actor. But I'm not a fan. I won't not go see something because he's in it or anything like that.

Re: What movies are you watching?
No range, but he's good at being the star. His schtick got old during the Mission Impossible movies, but I've enjoyed his movies lately.

Re: What movies are you watching?
It was probably added to because my neigbour growing up was a squadon leader at the air force and took me out to the base a few times to let me watch them test new aircraft and stuff (Back when we had a proper air force). I probably would have joined the force myself, but then I got too tall to fly jetsdurdencommatyler wrote:I totally get that. There are plenty of movies I feel that way about. Yeah, I like Tom Cruise. I wouldn't put him in my list of favorites, but he's thoroughly commited to his roles, and very watchable. He was fantastic in Collateral.

There's another one that just didn't grab me. He's probably the thing I like most about the movie, though.theplatypus wrote:Yeah, I like Tom Cruise. I wouldn't put him in my list of favorites, but he's thoroughly commited to his roles, and very watchable. He was fantastic in Collateral.
