what makes you think you should like them though? apart from the hype
mostly the hype.

I've got somewhat prickly tastes but I'm still coming out of the 90s alt rock tradition and iirc correctly these guys were billed as the heirs to that. Not necessarily in terms of sound, but that if you were into pearl jam and nirvana in 1993 you would be into arcade fire in 2008. Filling that same niche.

You can probably throw QOTSA on the list too

I think that analogy works better for QOTSA than AF

I read "adore" as "chore", and I am inclined to agree. Most of their stuff, especially the 80s, is quite tedious for me. I generally like the hits though.

Me too. They were one of those bands that knew which songs to release as singles. Their hits are pretty great. But it's all hit/miss (and a lot of miss for me) until Automatic. That run in the 90s is pretty sweet.

REM would probably be on my list. And I don't really like Nirvana or the Smashing Pumpkins very much, though I've been told that I should.

Really, most bands that I don't like I feel pretty comfortable not liking.

Same here. But the bands people seem to constantly be surprised that I don't like would definitely include Tool, Fugazi, The Ramones, The Misfits, Led Zeppelin, & Arcade Fire.

I don't understand why people (who are legitimately into music) like Lana Del Rey. Seriously, she's unlistenable.

BurtReynolds wrote:what are your top 5 bands of the last ten years, stip.

Amanda Palmer/Dresden dolls are easily number 1

Mark lanegan has been astonishingly prolific in the last ten years so I don't know if he counts.

She's very recent but I love Courtney Barnett

Beyond that I'm honestly not sure. But I've also only started really listening to new music again pretty recently. The first few years of the last 10 I was still clinging to the 90s. Then I spent a lot of time going backwards and digging into stuff I missed from the 70s and 80s. And then I just stopped having time for new music and so I'd pick up new songs here and there, check out an album, but rarely follow through. I was pretty happy with the few thousand songs I had in regular rotation.

Those are the big ones.

Ohhh, I should add the national to my list

She's terrible. But I have to imagine a lot of what I listen to would be considered "like" Lana Del Rey to people who just lump everything with a young, female vocalist together.

I used to really love tool, and can very easily see myself falling in love again if they produce a good album, but I totally get why people wouldn't like them.

I'm not too surprised by most of your list. Sloppy punk and arena anthems don't seem to be your thing
