Field Report - Marigolden
The Rural Alberta Advantage - Mended With Gold is also quite excellent and is not dissimilar.

The Twilight Sad's No One Wants To Be Here and No One Wants To Leave is challenging Benji for my favorite album of the year.

Nice. I have not picked up the new RAA yet. That is happening very soon. Love them.

Re: Albums of 2014
http://music.bladudflies.com/album/apologia"‘Apologia’ was written on a cheap Yamaha guitar with a ridiculously high action over the course a couple of months in 2002 and recorded in February 2003, a few months before I picked up a 12-string guitar for the first time and wrote and recorded my first release, ‘Celeste’. I’d just started fingerpicking and had gotten comfortable enough with some techniques to experiment with open tunings of my own devising and write my own compositions, which were at that time very inspired by the musicians I adored - John Fahey, Robbie Basho and lots of old country blues players like Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Blake and Reverend Gary Davis.
I burned about 30 CD-Rs with homemade covers in jewel cases, gave most to friends and family and sold a few in the record shop I used to work in Soho.
I felt for some time afterward like I was only just starting to find my own voice with ‘Apologia’ - the songs are shorter and more straightforward and the cyclical structures and appreciation of drones and overtones really came to the fore later on, as did my appreciation of adding other instrumentation and experimenting with sounds generally. Plus, I wasn’t entirely happy with the sound of the recording (some small EQ changes and reverb was added for this edition) and let’s just say the situation in the studio was far from ideal, but that’s another story.
For that reason, I never chose to reissue ‘Apologia’. Now, almost 12 years later, I’m hearing them in a different way, realising the songs' charms rather than simply concentrating on the flaws. It doesn’t sound quite like anything I’ve ever done since and there’s a simplicity and raw energy about them that I’ve grown to appreciate. It’s an interesting snapshot of where I was then and how things have changed.
It is an absolute pleasure for me to work with Bladud Flies! to release ‘Apologia’ as a limited edition LP now - something I would never have dreamed of back in 2003."

The criminally underrated Ike Reilly has four new songs and a back catalogue sampler for free download on noisetrade......I think the guy writes great songs but maybe i'm just biased because we've pounded High Life's together on a few occasions...

I grabbed Kiasmos' self titled album on a whim and it has been a most enjoyable listen. All instrumental, fantastic as a background soundtrack to having people over for a leisurely weekend beer or 7. Pretty good pedigree here - Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen.

Glad you liked em. They're fun although I wish they'd push their sound a bit more. I finally got a chance to see them live the other night. They played one of the final nights of my favorite venues in the city. It closes tomorrow.

Re: Albums of 2014
Due to having a kid that had health issues, a lot of the early 90's music was lost to me outside of Pearl Jam and a couple others. My son playing in punk bands got me listenign to punk, which I hadn'tlistened to since my high school days. Through him I got introduced to Green Day and Blink-182, bands I missed out on at the time.
I blame Strat for introducing me to The Replacements. Thought it was cool that my kid had Unsatisfied by them as a personal top five song in a school project. Never knew he listened to them at all.
RM for introducing me to Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson.
A lot of my discovery of bands has been through bands I like mentioning their influences and bands they admire or having them as an opening act. That was my introduction to the blues and especially delta blues, Hot Water Music, Moses Alison, Kanye West.

Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.
