Everything I've heard about college film courses greatly worries me.

Except when any college film course is watching Fight Club for any reason. That's how you know things are moving in the right direction.

I mean, I don't hate it or anything, but it's not exactly deep or noteworthy.

Fight Club? I don't know. I think the greatest film of all time is pretty noteworthy.

I get why people like it, I guess. I used to love it.

There's not a single movie I've ever seen that is more enriching, more watchable, more interesting and more purely perfect an experience than Fight Club. It's brilliant from top to bottom. Every frame is just outstanding. And if one has read the book, they appreciate what Fincher actually did in that movie all the more. It's a special, special film. But that's all subjective. I could totally understand why a person would disagree. I just can't think of single more fulfilling theatrical film experience.

That's all fair. It's definitely a very focused, watchable movie with a strong style and aesthetic. But these days, for me, I find its thematic substance to be very shallow and ham-fisted. The points it's making about masculinity and modern culture seem too obvious and self-satisifed to be meaningful.

Films are ghosts. Just because every other romantic comedy has ripped off Annie Hall, and every Woody Allen comedy has stolen from it, doesn't deflate the importance or excellence of Annie Hall itself. Every film will feel old or used or culturally limp on a long enough timeline. That doesn't take away from what the film achieved at the time it was released, nor does it devalue the film's legacy.

I, however, think Fight Club still holds up. But again, it's been a few years since I've watched it.
