I think it still holds up perfectly. I'm totally in Joey's camp on this one. Fight Club is perfect in every waytheplatypus wrote:Have you watched it recently? I don't think it holds up that well. It blew my mind when I first watched it, yeah.

Re: Rank the Brad Pitt Movies
Films are ghosts. Just because every other romantic comedy has ripped off Annie Hall, and every Woody Allen comedy has stolen from it, doesn't deflate the importance or excellence of Annie Hall itself. Every film will feel old or used or culturally limp on a long enough timeline. That doesn't take away from what the film achieved at the time it was released, nor does it devalue the film's legacy.LoathedVermin72 wrote:That's all fair. It's definitely a very focused, watchable movie with a strong style and aesthetic. But these days, for me, I find its thematic substance to be very shallow and ham-fisted. The points it's making about masculinity and modern culture seem too obvious and self-satisifed to be meaningful.durdencommatyler wrote:There's not a single movie I've ever seen that is more enriching, more watchable, more interesting and more purely perfect an experience than Fight Club. It's brilliant from top to bottom. Every frame is just outstanding. And if one has read the book, they appreciate what Fincher actually did in that movie all the more. It's a special, special film. But that's all subjective. I could totally understand why a person would disagree. I just can't think of single more fulfilling theatrical film experience.LoathedVermin72 wrote:I get why people like it, I guess. I used to love it.durdencommatyler wrote:Fight Club? I don't know. I, however, think Fight Club still holds up. But again, it's been a few years since I've watched it.

Oh heavens no.
That's a great yuck, but if you really believe that, you've missed the point entirely.

This is not true at all.durdencommatyler wrote:Every film will feel old or used or culturally limp on a long enough timeline.

We'll never know if it's true or not because you and I won't live forever. But I'd be willing to be I'm speaking accurately. Either way, I must have misread your point.LoathedVermin72 wrote:This is not true at all.durdencommatyler wrote:Every film will feel old or used or culturally limp on a long enough timeline.

I haven't watched Fight Club in 3-4 years, but I can't imagine why the movie would be any less enjoyable today.

Dude, how long of a timeline are we talking? I can watch Gone with the Wind now - a movie that is 75 years old - and it stills feels vital, fresh, alive, powerful, hypnotic, and exciting every time I watch it. And I don't think another 75 years or even another 200 years will diminish that effect at all.durdencommatyler wrote:We'll never know if it's true or not because you and I won't live forever. What do you guys have against Killing Them Softly? It's all the way at the bottom of LV's list, and towards the bottom of ruddo's. I'd put it first. What's the deal?

That fucking thing is even more obnoxiously heavy-handed in its ultra-overt point-making than Crash. I didn't even know that was possible. And on top of that, the points its trying so hard to make are pretty cynical and, it could be argued, facile. The Argonaut wrote:What do you guys have against Killing Them Softly?
