These are three of the best books I've read this year. Just fantastic, all three.

1. The year is 1975 and Reno—so-called because of the place of her birth—has come to New York intent on turning her fascination with motorcycles and speed into art. Her arrival coincides with an explosion of activity in the art world—artists have colonized a deserted and industrial SoHo, are staging actions in the East Village, and are blurring the line between life and art. Reno meets a group of dreamers and raconteurs who submit her to a sentimental education of sorts. Ardent, vulnerable, and bold, she begins an affair with an artist named Sandro Valera, the semi-estranged scion of an Italian tire and motorcycle empire.Strat wrote:durdencommatyler wrote:The Flamethrowers - by Rachel KushnerStrat wrote:Im not reading anything right now. Brief Synopsis of each please?
2. Astonish Me is the irresistible story of Joan, a young American dancer who helps a Soviet ballet star, the great Arslan Rusakov, defect in 1975. A flash of fame and a passionate love affair follow, but Joan knows that, onstage and off, she is destined to remain in the background. She will never possess Arslan, and she will never be a prima ballerina. She will rise no higher than the corps, one dancer among many. After her relationship with Arslan sours, Joan plots to make a new life for herself. She quits ballet, marries a good man, and settles in California with him and their son, Harry. But as the years pass, Joan comes to understand that ballet isn’t finished with her yet, for there is no mistaking that Harry is a prodigy. Through Harry, Joan is pulled back into a world she thought she’d left behind—back into dangerous secrets, and back, inevitably, to Arslan.
3. Celebrated brain surgeon Thomas Eapen has been sitting on his porch, talking to dead relatives. At least that is the story his wife, Kamala, prone to exaggeration, tells their daughter, Amina, a photographer living in Seattle.
Reluctantly Amina returns home and finds a situation that is far more complicated than her mother let on, with roots in a trip the family, including Amina’s rebellious brother Akhil, took to India twenty years earlier. Confronted by Thomas’s unwillingness to explain himself, strange looks from the hospital staff, and a series of puzzling items buried in her mother’s garden, Amina soon realizes that the only way she can help her father is by coming to terms with her family’s painful past. In doing so, she must reckon with the ghosts that haunt all of the Eapens.

I'm reading my students' papers right now, and they are so fucking boring. Every time I teach comp, I try to craft assignments that will be enjoyable to read. I think it's impossible.

I say things like: "Adding dialogue could really brighten up this paper! Also, why the fuck would anyone want to read this?"Alex wrote:you should write "boring" on their papers as feedbackSimple Torture wrote:I'm reading my students' papers right now, and they are so fucking boring. Re: What are you currently reading?

Finished "The Supernatural Enhancements". It's been a few days and I still don't know what to think about the ending. The book was appropriately creepy but then it turned into 'let's solve this cypher!" and I glazed over those pages but then it came back together at the end and then there was an epilogue that took the story in a complete 180 corkscrew that brings me back to my second sentence: It's been a few days and I still don't know what to think about the ending.

Also picked Acceptance back up and I'm finding it hard to read. I really enjoyed the first book and this is just a continuation of that but I don't know how that's possible since there's only

Re: What are you currently reading?
They're supposed to be 3-4 pages and most of them can't get to 2.5, so it actually wouldn't apply.Alex wrote:nice work. may i suggest slapping a "tl;dr" on one of them?Simple Torture wrote:I say things like: "Adding dialogue could really brighten up this paper! One of my students used the phrase "Cleveland Steamer" in his paper and I don't know what to do.

From the context, it sounded like it was the nickname of the dishwasher at his restaurant job.durdencommatyler wrote:Did he use it appropriately?Simple Torture wrote:One of my students used the phrase "Cleveland Steamer" in his paper and I don't know what to do.

Another story sounds fishy, and my fiancee tells me it's lifted from a Robert Pattinson movie. But I honestly don't give a shit enough to check.

Another student wrote about watching a Patriots playoff game during his basic training. But all of the things he remembers from the game never actually happened.
