Re: March 31 - Pearl Jam in São Paulo - Brazil - Lollapalooz
I've been pushing this thought for a few years, but I really think it is hard to judge a show by its setlist. I mean, sure, if you only like certain songs and they did not play them and you are thinking about getting the official bootleg - makes sense. But my position has been if you weren't at the show or at least heard the show in some capacity, it's not really possible to judge whether the show was good, bad, or meh. Some of the better Pearl Jam shows I've seen have had some of the blander setlists.

The 'hits' set lists are always the high energy, more enjoyable ones.
Had PJ played a ton of rarities last night, these assholes would be complaining that they butchered them and didnt rehearse them. Without even having heard them. Fact.

FTR i am not asking for rarities. Their festival set lists have become standard pj stand-alone setlists as well.

So in two sentences what is it you want?
Wanting anything from a show you aren't actually attending is ridiculous but shoot. I'm all ears.
(I don't mean you in particular strat, just the whole culture of complain no matter what. It's mind numbingly boring at this point. The same people saying PJ should break up, or should have years ago, are the same ones that would call them chicken shits if they did. I just don't get it. It's not even a skit, it's just bellyaching for the sake of it. Nauseating, far more so than the love fest they accuse the pit crowd of.)

There was very little commentary on the setlist itself in this thread, the discussions were almost entirely centered around the webcast and feelings on the band more generally.given2trade wrote:Yes, I never commented on the setlist once.cutuphalfdead wrote:To be honest, I don't really care about the setlist. I didn't expect anything different. I'm just noting that this band doesn't really do much to get me excited anymore.
From reading the criticisms, you'd think that this thread was seven pages of people tearfully lamenting that the band played Black and Better Man instead of a reggae arrangement of Sweet Lew with Jack Irons on djembe, etc.

I heard that they didn't agree to the webcast because Oracle wasn't hosting.
While a Western guitar motif lost on the swings drum bass fusion, get your own thoughts into the subconscious often forgotten. "Pendulum" is a sweeping soul from the ballast.

Ed did a gay mariage speech before Betterman. Pretty sure that was one of the reasons.Blenheim Augustine wrote:I heard that they didn't agree to the webcast because Oracle wasn't hosting.

Just in case it gets pulled, it's a far-away audience video of Even Flow shot on someone's phone:

no, instead a set list for what was apparently a really good show became a chance for a standard 'everything is wrong with pearl jam these days' chain of posts. you can't escape it. it is a prevalent here as its mirror is at the pit, except this place and its posters can theoretically be better than that.Birds in Hell wrote:There was very little commentary on the setlist itself in this thread, the discussions were almost entirely centered around the webcast and feelings on the band more generally.given2trade wrote:Yes, I never commented on the setlist once.cutuphalfdead wrote:To be honest, I don't really care about the setlist. Hmm, looking at the posting history of "kat ten", I'm not convinced that it isn't just a fan fucking around. On the other hand, it's all too easy to imagine that being a legitimate 10C response, so who knows.

also, since I took the 5 minutes to do this.
Spenno is right to criticize the following:
But then we have the exact same stuff (the negative version) here. Everything that follows is from pages 2-3 of this thread, after we knew nothing about this festival show other than its setlist. I just don't see much of a difference.

One guy says it's kind of shitty they didn't allow the webcast when every other band did, so the Ten Club cheersquad goes bananas:
They gave you a chance to see them. Buy a ticket to the show. Webcast is up to them. I'd run my band the same damn way. The level of entitlement here would make me quit. I'm glad they ignore it and keep doing what THEY love the WAY they love it.So sick of all the fucking bitching and crying here. Happy Easter to all you spoiled pricks. Find something that really matters in this world to bitch about. Buy the bootleg and watch the YouTube vids when the chance arrives and just be fucking happy instead of feeling your entitled to be part of everything this band does.etc.It wouldn't matter if the band explained why they didn't allow it, probably wouldn't matter if they did show it, people on here would still find something to fucking complain about. Sorry, but it's getting tiresome. It seems every last little move they make lately is bitched about. It gets old. It's hard to read a single thread lately without someone bashing the band for something.
By the way, I bought the track suit, wear it and love it. I have had more people compliment it than you would ever believe!
Peace. Can't wait for Wrigley!

It is. That may be partially our fault (the fans in general) because it could may never live up to the expectations but I am assuming on paper it will be the biggest disappointment of their career.

Strat wrote:Geezes christ im getting so bitter about this band. Which is irrational but my love for them over the past 20 years was irrational. The decisions they make are just absurd and i cant find one reason or another why they make the decisions they do.
Not doing the webcast? What?
Lame.
I tried listening to Ten the other night and it actually bothered me. Like it isnt even the same band and it soured my listening pleasure.
I may have been drunk and emotional. I am not sure. Still deciding .But its weird. And this is coming from strat. So ....that says something.
Birds in Hell wrote:I think the problems I have with present-day Pearl Jam are probably insurmountable, to be honest.
I just don't really care for the way the band sounds when they play the old material, whether that's due to Ed's changed vocal capabilities or some other reason.
It's not that I don't love the songs - I've listened to Yield, Ten and a mixed CD of b-sides just in the last week or so - but when these guys play them now, I'm not feeling it.
verb_to_trust wrote:I don't think they take themselves seriously enough anymore to be honest. I wish they still viewed themselves as relevant. I do think if Ed was still focused we would all give him a pass on his voice deteriorating with age. Unfortunately, I think the big reason they sound so blah these days is because they slap together these short tours and don't rehearse....Birds in Hell wrote:I think the problems I have with present-day Pearl Jam are probably insurmountable, to be honest.

Strat wrote:I think eds voice is still fantastic - the music they write - more times than not - just doesnt support that. . I dont expect him, nor care if he can scream DTE or Porch like he once did. No singer should be able to considering the way he pushed his voice...
It seems the problem is, as someone stated above, they dont present themselves as believing they are still relevant. They are taking the easy route for too long now. Not presenting themselves as artists. That breaks strats heart.
verb_to_trust wrote:Yeah, I haven't heard a true attempt at that since maybe Riot Act.....Birds in Hell wrote:Perhaps.verb_to_trust wrote:I don't think they take themselves seriously enough anymore to be honest. There's lots of bands who've been together longer or are of a similar age (or older) than these guys who I continue to be blown away by, even if I recognise they've probably recorded their best work. I still feel that connection and don't doubt for a moment that they still care just as much about their music as they once did. It's too bad these guys didn't turn out like that, at least not right now.
verb_to_trust wrote:I think where the band also loses the plot is not realizing there are a group of fans who still want to view them as artists and not festival party rockers. So when you don't throw that group a bone by tossing a new song on the setlist a thread like this turns into the General Pearl Jam Bitching thread instead of the the lets talk about what we thought of that new song thread....
Its true they did this with Ole'. But Ole sucked.....
spike wrote:They're content being a nostalgic jukebox act; whether they know it or not, they're over being Pearl Jam. I mean, Eddie Vedder's solo shows are still soulful and I bet Jeff Ament would rather write music for whatever his current band is.
