Look, the music is fine. But Eddie sounds like he's holding his nose and taking a shit at the same time.

Ed hasn't sounded as good as he did on Binaural. And i'm not talking about vocal performance, more vocal delivery and knowing when to sing the hell out of a note and when not to.

For some reason, my favorite thing about Evacuation (and this has held true since first listen) is Ed's vocal.stip wrote:Look, the music is fine. But Eddie sounds like he's holding his nose and taking a shit at the same time.

I love everything about evacuation. The guitar chagnes, the tones, the sexy groove and bass, the weird ass bridges, the vocals, the delivery, the lyrics...
That is my cup of PJ right there.

I'm just not a fan of his vocals on this album. I mean they're Ed so I still like them. He's my favorite singer for a reason. But I think i'd put them towards the bottom of his overall effortspnjguy wrote:Ed hasn't sounded as good as he did on Binaural. Re: The Best Moment in...Binaural
When I first bought Binaural (I had only heard NAIS before buying it) I thought Breakerfall and Gods' Dice were hugely disappointing tracks. I've since come around a bit on them, but at the time it was devastating. They were the first tracks of the new Pearl Jam album and I didn't like them. And that was the first time that had ever happened to me with Pearl Jam.Strat wrote:I love everything about evacuation. However, Evacuation struck an instant chord and I thought, "well this is more like it."

I went through a lengthy period of having no interest in Pearl Jam from around 1999 to 2004 or so - when I finally heard Binaural, Evacuation was the only song that bowled me over on first listen.durdencommatyler wrote:When I first bought Binaural (I had only heard NAIS before buying it) I thought Breakerfall and Gods' Dice were hugely disappointing tracks. It's still such a fantastic song, highly enjoyable on a basic level but also very thoughtfully composed. Given recent efforts, it's somewhat staggering to remember Pearl Jam used to come up with songs like that.

And it says a lot about Pearl Jam's fanbase that it's their most universally hated song.Birds in Hell wrote: It's still such a fantastic song, highly enjoyable on a basic level but also very thoughtfully composed. And it wasn't written by "Pearl Jam". It was written by Matt Cameron. I'm sure he could still come up with cool songs like that in his sleep. The problem is that Mike McCready would have to learn how to play them, and he's too busy playing an Even Flow solo behind his back and wiping the poop out of his pants.

Re: The Best Moment in...Binaural
While the Mike part is very likely to be true the Matt part isn't. Cameron writes about 1 song per record for either PJ or Soundgargen. I don't think he ever could write anything in his sleep.Wendy Carlos's Twin wrote:And it says a lot about Pearl Jam's fanbase that it's their most universally hated song.Birds in Hell wrote: It's still such a fantastic song, highly enjoyable on a basic level but also very thoughtfully composed. We don't have any way of knowing how many songs any of them write per album cycle. We only know the ones they record and release.

Re: The Best Moment in...Binaural
True but since very few of his songs ended on albums of either band is more likely that he didn't write that many.
On a related note we have no way of knowing if he has any real interest in writing to begin with.
The notion however that he does, and much of his music doesn't get to see the light of day because his band mates are morons is much more compelling in the context of a web forum.

I would say Matt's work with Wellwater Conspiracy supports the idea that he can -- or once could -- be a consistent and productive songwriter. Many of those songs would have been highlights on PJ records.

What ed did with Felicities surprise is proof that he can make those songs work if he puts the effort in. Also, i dont feel its a matter or effort it just goes back to what they believe a PJ record should be anod how that hinders there work effort.

Re: The Best Moment in...Binaural
And funnily, despite Matt's reputation as a writer of "difficult" songs, "Felicity's Surprise" is probably one of the downright catchiest songs Eddie has ever warbled.
