A worse contract than Verlander's?

You dislike the deal?
I'm guessing there's going to be at least $45 million per year in wasted payroll between him and Fielder in about 5 years from now.
You think JV will be done by 35?
Maybe not done, but certainly not a $23 million a year pitcher. I hope I'm wrong and I eat crow, but I think his innings start catching up to him.

I hope not either, but if Detroit didn't give him this contract now, someone else would have (and then some) after 2014.
Probably. But if someone else wanted to give him a huge deal when he's 32, I still wouldn't have a problem with it. They're going to have to re-tool one of these days.

so basically you just want them to sign guys to nothing but one year deals?
Yes, that's exactly what I said.

haha. Sorry. I was making one last post from my phone before bed. CHUD basically said it right. There is no question it's a risk, but it's a risk you have to take if you want to keep top end starters at this point. If I'm going to give SP a long term deal, im glad its one that has proven to be extremely durable. If you start classifying all guys as either "injury prone" or "due for an injury" there is never going to be a good signing. And believe it or not, Im actually okay with dealing Max after the season, because it's clear you wont be able to keep him. And that's a guy you're going to be able to almost restock the farm system by dealing.

Really excited that the Sox don't have a West Coast swing early in the season (not until July) and that they don't play in Texas in April; I have no statistical evidence to back this up, but if memory serves me correctly, those things usually kill them.

Verlander is the best pitcher in the game. He's been the face of the franchise. He's at the top of his game. As the owner of the Tigers, you absolutely have to re-sign him. I get all of that. I don't blame the Tigers one bit for the contract. But that doesn't make it a "good" contract.

So the Marlins had to resort to trying to sell Opening Day tickets on groupon. Tickets sold: 0.

Love it.

I also thought the other offers they were making were hilarious as well. 50% off Opening Day tickets and you get two free tickets to another game in April.

I hope nobody shows up.

pretty sure its normally going to be around 5pm? before the games start up?
the live look ins are indeed WAY better... (and on a side note, there isnt many games going on at the time of the MLB Now show tonight as most the openers were already done, or, West coast / not started yet...)

How long till Ichiro wants to get traded back to Seattle? LOL
the Yankees have 93 million on the DL (ARods making more on the DL then the opening day payroll for the Astros... TEAM!)

For all winning teams, there comes a time to pay the piper when your stars are agin, injured, and overpaid - and all locked in contract due to the need to feed the beast for a time. Boston had the last few years of experiencing something like that. It appears that the Yankees' turn is this year. I'm frankly shocked they made it this long given their core players should have bottomed out 3 years ago at least.
