I love Adam Sandler. I think he's one of the best actors currently working, and I think his filmography is much richer and deeper than people want to acknowledge.

Also, I have seen every movie he's ever been in. Go ahead, ask me about any movie he's appeared in and I'll give you my thoughts on it.

Grown Ups 2 is a huge missed opportunity. What I love about it, and what is pretty revolutionary, is that it essentially has no plot.

To me, plot is anathema. The least interesting part of movies is story exposition. I just don't care. I'm in it for human characters, themes, atmosphere, aesthetic beauty, insight, etc. Story has no bearing on any of that.

So the loose, free-flowing quasi-narrative in Grown Ups 2 (a bunch of friends just kind of bum around town for a while before a party sort of assembles itself) was very refreshing to me. And it fits the material, as well, since it mirrors the lazy haze of summertime idyll. The first Grown Ups flirted with this approach also, but did not take it to such an extreme.

That said, the movie is fucking terrible. The loose approach to narrative is wasted when the movie is laughless and charmless. Not to mention that the warm humanism that Happy Madison productions usually strive for is undercut by boatloads of odious misogyny (an unfortunate undercurrent of many Happy Madison movies) that interferes with any fun or humor that may be found...not that there's really any to be found anyway.
