Late arrival as usual.
Two tracks in so far and both sound so promising. I'm really liking The Only Cloud in the Sky.

Maybe not in music, which may mean that your ability to 'matter' is related more to your image and your promotion of the idea of your self--and pearl jam is going to totally be left in the dust on that scoreMine wrote:I was thinking about this. I mean it seems like it's like with mobile phones - essential - best thing ever - can not not have it - until the next model comes out making the former model irrelevant. They certainly remind people that the band still exists, if nothing else. the songs do seem to kind of exist in a curious vacuum though. They've had some genuinely big hits in recent years, but they seem to me to be stand alone songs that aren't altering people's impression of the band in any way. pearl jam could release 10 sirens and still be thought of as the band that made jeremy, not the band that made jeremy and sirens. But maybe i'm wrong about that. I'm happy to concede the others will have a better sense of this than I.McParadigm wrote:The "they made three records a long time ago" story was certainly the norm for a while. And maybe it still carries over a bit, but the perception seems to be shifting towards a careerist angle in the US, as the band becomes more and more of a historical object. And with good reason...
1. The late-career successes of songs like Just Breathe, The Fixer, and Sirens (each of these places among their most-selected tracks on most streaming media sites...Just Breathe ranks above Daughter and Betterman on last.fm, classic radio playlists and, usually, on iTunes' weekly sales) have pushed us a little away from the whole "the band that made Ten" story. Whether or not these tracks have the impact of those early records (obviously not), the simple fact is that having recent genuine late-era successes does have an impact in the way people perceive a band's career.

I really enjoy this Breeze in D tune. Even just as an instrumental.

Can you tell if the instrumental take is more or less the one used on the album? I haven't compared, but the one time I listened to this new version, it was clearer than ever that they should've let the solo play out until the end.stip wrote:Man, that outro to life wasted is just so good. Re: Avocado Demos II leak!
So is this mother load of Avocado material (along with CC and LIR) going to bring the S/T era to a new level of fanboy love? I'm thinking about Binaural and how it wasn't that well received in 2000 until we looked back at the sum of the parts with Fatal, Sad, Education and In the Moonlight, and we realize it was a great period for the band.
There's another factor at play too, which is the element of time. Everyone loves to shit all over the new material until it's 3-albums old. Then there's newer stuff to bitch about, and we begin to enjoy the gems that we were quick to dismiss.
So will this move S/T up in the rankings?
Or will it always be reamed as an over-compressed POS?

I thought there was no overriding opinion on RM? Atleast that's what people keep telling me.......southp wrote:So is this mother load of Avocado material (along with CC and LIR) going to bring the S/T era to a new level of fanboy love? It's not identical, since the soloing that appears during the final chorus is absence in the demo. The outro solo may be the same. It's certainly very close. I'll need to compare it to the 6 songs S/T leak, which also had a full version of life wastedsouthp wrote:Can you tell if the instrumental take is more or less the one used on the album? the production issues are pretty legit. We may need to wait for the S/T remasters. But I think it'll certainly make people revisit the 'pearl jam is out of ideas' storyline---or at least kick it forward a few more years.southp wrote:So is this mother load of Avocado material (along with CC and LIR) going to bring the S/T era to a new level of fanboy love? I think I might prefer this version of Life Wasted over the studio cut, and not b/c of the outtro - which I think is a bit overhyped anyway (its pretty standard Mike-fare). Besides the much more ear pleasing recording, the song just comes across so much less butt rock than the studio version. Ed actually seems like a mess in this mumbled stage of the song. Just comes across a bit more authentic to me.

Re: Avocado Demos II leak!
The difference with binaural is that album was already full of good songs. There were just more good songs left off. These leaks don't all of a sudden make life wasted and inside job good.

Life Wasted and Inside Job are already good. As are WWS, MITS, Unemployable, Parachutes and Come Back. That's why S/T rekindled my love for the band. I don't care for these leaked tracks much, besides Only Cloud in The Sky and maybe 2x4 which could have been good PJ songs. Others aren't songs I'd want on the album, at least not judging by the state they are in.

I relistened to Binaural after a looooong time day before. Still underwhelmed by it. NAIS, Grievance, Light Years shine while Of The Girl and Sleight Of Hand were better than I remembered. The rest, especially the rockers are just not my cup of tea.

Life Wasted is a horrible song with or without the outro.

See? It's working. S/T is finally being redeemed for everyone who already liked it.Release_Me wrote:Life Wasted and Inside Job are already good. As far as I'm concerned, S/T didn't need redeeming.
